has anyone here kept them? i would like your opinions of them, im thinking of getting a few for my 4ft long 220 litre tank

i had one for about 4 weeks or so. barely ever saw the guy as he was constantly hiding in the decorative ship that was in the tank. he was cute looking but my parents (it was in their tank) didnt find it useful to havea fish they couldn't see use up tank space

yeah, there notorious for hiding but i plan on strategically placing caves etc so that they can be seen

I agree a fish you never see is not worth having. I had a medusa pleco a big waste of space. I gave it back to the store. If you watch them at night you might get to enjoy it. I was thinking of getting one. I did lots research. They live a long time. Can be annoying at night with the strange sounds they make with their scales.

You might get lucky and get one that's not as shy. They are cool I still might get one someday. But for now I'm sticking to plecos.

they have them in my local lfs,( very cheap!! ) i like them alot, even if they are nocturnal. i was thinking of setting up some moonlight spot lights in the tank for night viewing
at current, there are 7 sharing a tank with some 4 inch sailfin plecos, they seem happy enough.....for now.lol
i was thinking of 2 para pleco's and 2 talking catfish, and maybe a shoal of something, possibly black widow tetras.
ihave had two over a life time, one i got when it was 4" and he wa not sy at all, though i think i got lucky 
my current one is at a tiny 1.5" so hes got a long way to go hehe. they are long living and almost impossible to do, idiot-proof basicaly. only way to kill it is to use a high amount of something thats bad for it and throwing out of the water.
this might seem redundant and i hate it w\when people tell me but never catch the mother with a net.
to me they are really cool, and hold a special place in my heart for beng the first non-cory catfish i have ever had. (btw the old catfish i had was given to a friend, and when i moved back to california he was still alive!) thats been by 010 9 years and i think its safe to say due to the size i got him at first add another year or two. males tend to have darker lines on em like almost orange.
this might be a good place to ask how long do they take to grow? i think this would be a good q to ask

if the other fish tend to get his food feed him when you turn off the lights

I have 3 striped and 2 spotted and they are really nice if very shy fish. The strped ones are abour 4" now but I've seen a full grown one - 8-10" long and about as wide! They do grow slowly after the 1st year though.
Mine do come out for food and eat pretty much anything. They feel more secure with plenty of cover so you would see more of them then.
