Yes, Dan's are good, "hobbyist raised in Europe". I have some of the same and they are breeding and crossing with some I bought from here in State-Side. Bare in mind, Dan's are probably brothers and sisters which is why I am crossing them with another breeder's fish.
You should remove any fish, shrimp, snails, etc. and give them the water parameters and plants they require in order to be successful, IMHO.
Beyond maturity, their colors with improve and fins develop.
I have a few youngsters that are growing nicely but still a few months away from being saleable...Jim
