I've noticed that whenever I do a water change on the tank, my hands tend to feel "odd" and tingle for several hours. This happens even after I wash them with soap. I usually end up with my hands in the water to replace plants that have been dislodged.

Has anyone else experienced this? I guess I'm just wondering if it means there's something in the water that could be dangerous in some fashion.

Be very careful with your tanks. Some people have shown severe allergic reactions to things that many fish keepers take for granted like brine shrimp or even some of the other frozen foods that we use. If you are having an allergic reaction to something in your tank, take it very seriously. Allergies like that seldom just go away. Instead they often get far worse over time.

I have never had that happen. Nasty pond smell and pruney fingers, yes, but no tingling.. Like OM47 said, I would be wary. They do make full arm gloves for using with aquariums if the tingling gets too bad.

I have never felt that. As others have said, you should take great caution from now on because there's a good chance something in the tank is triggering an allergic reaction. Or maybe just a moderate sensitivity to some of the tank chemicals, but it's best to play safe.

Thanks for the replies. I do feed frozen brine shrimp and of course I treat the water (I use Prime). I don't tend to have allergies, but I am allergic to tuna fish (but no other fish...kind of weird). So maybe it is a reaction to something in the water. I think I'll invest in the gloves- I've seen them at our LFS. It's a very strange, unpleasant feeling- almost like after the dentist when you first start to get sensation back in your mouth after a Novocain injection.

Thanks again- I'd much rather deal with clumsy gloves than end up anaphylactic shock or something!

That's probably a good call. Allergies are a fickle thing. I don't tend to have allergies either, but something about elephants trigger mine. Maybe it's something they eat, something they kick up stomping around, whatever it may be. We don't get along.

Use gloves, I had a similar problem when I kept a reef set up, it turns out I was allergic to the nematocysts that Aiptasia were throwing out.

Yes!!! I get it with the new water when I put in the declorinator and I swirl it around. But it doesn't last for as long as you. Maybe you are allergic?

You might want to see an allergist as well, just to be safe. :good:

If you are allergic to sulfa drugs one of the components in Prime is sulfa based. A friend of mine had this issue, had to discontinue using it.

but i think it might be because my tank is warm and i have small arm hairs that lift up when they're drying

Just one other thing to check here;

Are you turning off your equipment before you do tank maintainance?

This 'tingling' could well be electrical bleed from the heater for example (which wouldn't show in the fish).

Try it next time, see if it still tingles!! ;p

My hands feel a little weird, too, after a tank cleaning. They just feel really dry and sort of itchy so I just use some good lotion afterwards and they're fine..
