Sera Nematol.
if so was it affective or useless.

I did :hyper:
after i noticed the red things out of my female angel.(and followed your advice)
that was about 6-8 months ago, i only did the first treatment  because i lost my big angel (lost his balance and died)and my gupie babies
and almost lost my big pearl swimming upside down(couldnt bear to loose him so i stopped and didn't back up the treatment 3 weeks later).
and only the last month have i noticed two fish scratching themselves.

so my judgment is ..... it works, it kills the worms. and if i had done a second treatment to kill the eggs 3 weeks later.
it probably wouldn't have come back.
:good:
i am going to run a treatment again soon.
when i have the strength

I'm wieghing up the option of using either Sera Nematol (sold in UK)

or using levamisole hydrochloride ( http://www.loaches.com/disease-treatment/levamisole-hydrochloride-1 )
sold in US however charles@inkmkr.com is able to send to UK @ 5 grams for $10.00 plus $16.00 P&P (about £15)

Mikaila31, is Levamisole a common product in the US? Do you get it in liquid / powder form? Is it light - sensitive like I've heard, how do you go about treating your fish with it. Thanks. Martin.

Levamisole is fairly easy to get over here. But I also live in rural Wisconsin. I got mine from a farm supply store, Fleetfarm or Farm and Fleet is what it is called. They carry it as a pig dewormer, 18 grams for $16-20. Its a soluble powder that is 90% pure, its made by Agrilabs. I used the same link to figure out dosage. I round it to 0.1 grams per 10 gallons. You use hardly any of the stuff. For doseing I use a little electronic scale, bought for weighing EI ferts. It comes in handy for lots of other things though. Heres one, they are cheap and from china but mines been working for over a year. I've never heard of levamisole being light sensitive, my fish meds are all kept in a dark cupboard though. Mine did just passed it expiration date. I plan to keep using it unless I see negative effects.

The med is really soft on the fish, the fish do not seem affected by it at all. It does a good job on removing interanl parasites, it does it very quickly in 24hrs. From my experience with this med. It is a great preventative med. All my new fish get treated with it in quarantine. However, if a fish has worms visible from the anus don't use this med if you want to save it. It will most likely die if you use levamisole, this is only from my personal experience. I think this is because the med works too quickly. Protruding worms means the fish has a lot of them and they dig into the intestinal wall. This weakens the fish, removal of all the worms within a day ends up killing the fish. It will quickly and safely cure mild cases and moderate cases stand a good chance. Internal parasites are hard to screen for its easy for them to not show up until after quarantine. I had problems with them once. Which is why all my new fish get treated for them.

As for levamisole in the UK. I found this its for birds, but contains only levamisole. I googled its active ingredients, 80mg levamisole/mL. A little math.... use 1.25mL per 10 gal for aquarium use.

Thanks everyone.
Thanks for the detailed reply mikaila

Awesome Mikaila31 that's everything I needed to hear! Just bought the Harka Verm off EBay. I'll keep this thread up2date when I've treated them.

Have just received my bottle of Harka-Verm Liquid Wormer. It is 80% Levamisole Hydrochloride.

Just have a couple of questions regarding going ahead with the treatment...

I have just treated the tank for Slime and Velvet. Does anyone know how much of a water change, or indeed how many, and how long I should leave Carbon in for to remove this med before treating for the worms.

I don't really have a quarantine tank set up, so I was planning on treating the whole tank with this med. Would anyone advise against this? You can see my stocking below in my sig. Only the two Bolivian Rams are showing signs of the Callamanus worm.

Also, I've read here http://www.loaches.com/disease-treatment/levamisole-hydrochloride-1 that this med is light sensitive. If this is the case, how will my plants do without any light for the 3 days?

Many thanks guys :)

Preform a 40% water change and run some new black carbon for a full day.

The plants could be moved and steralised.

40% water change, done. Carbon in filter, done. If I have the carbon in for one day can I dry it out and use it again? seems like a waste..

:D

no more signs of the worms stickin out of my B Ram's bottom! Treated tank with the Harka-Verm last night. Ive read to do a water change after 24 hrs, unfortunately I'm going to have to leave it 48 hrs

So far so good. No side effects and no worms! I plan to do a big water change tomorrow and suck as much crap off the sand (hopefully some paralysed worms) as possible. Then re-treat with Harka-Verm. Water change again after 24 hrs. Then leave it 3 weeks and do this all over again! :look: :S

Glad the wormer has get rid of the internal parasites.

Does the wormer also treat bacterial infections. As you have to back up with a bacterial med.

Carbon unless once it drys out. Might aswell throw it away.
Carbon only works for 2 to 9 days.

Did you find any red threads/worms at the bottom of the tank? One of my guppies had camallanus and I permanetly removed him from the tank then treated it with Levamisole. The other fish didn't have any symptoms and I never found red threads in the tank.

Hey. No, I didn't see any of the worms - I did the best vacuum of the sand as possible though. Just because the B Rams dont have them sticking out of their bottoms anymore, I'm not convinced that theyre fully rid of them either! Im going to repeat this treatment a few times over to clear the notorius eggs.

No Wilder I don't believe Harka-Verm is a anit bacterial med too. Can you recommend one? What is melafix used for btw?

Glad to hear it helped! :)

I've never seen the worms passed from fish I have treated either. Some were highly suspected of carrying them though. The one time I have seen the worms was when I lost a fish who showed no signs of worms(none protruding from the anus). Something was clearly wrong with him and had been killing fish in this tank. When he died I put him in a plastic cup w/ some water so I could take a closer look at him. I came back a few hours later and he had a ton of red worms trying to get out of him .

Just clean the tank well and repeat the treatment a few times, spaced apart. its important to clean the tank and filter well after the treatment as well as do a very large water change. I always aim for 100%, but of course leave some water so the fish can swim .
