another newbie question from me

I have an ac mini in my 10 gallon and i was wondering how i should clean the foam inserts. I tried cleaning it once but when i took it out of the filter all this gunk went into the water. should i have the filter turned off before i clean it? Or does that always happen?

Heh, I'm sure we've all done that. More than a couple of times, in my case.

Yes, turn off the filter before you move the sponge.

And, of course, try to rinse the sponge in tank (dechlorinated) water.

Yep thats what I exactly do. And i have messed up twice and left the filter on. Bad idea.
