another new to me fish… Leporinus granti

I’ve got a couple young Leporinus granti coming to shake things up in my Silver Dollar tank, and as a potential addition to the big tank when it finally gets set up this year…

anyone have them??? I had a larger variety leporinus years ago, so these are a 1st for me…

I have a friend with a number of different species spread over his very large (150 gallon plus) tanks. They seem to be potential holy terrors as a group, unless in good numbers in large tanks. They're fun to watch swimming against the current, which is what he's seen them doing while diving in their habitats.. He controls their aggression with heavy flow pumps.

my previous, years ago, was a Leporinus fasciatus, which I think are a little larger, and a little more aggressive, but even those, I would think would be fine with Silver Dollars

Sorry, no, never kept them. Closest I got are species presenting similar challenges-- the Anostomus species, especially the type species, A. anostomus.

Hey now ! That’s a good looking fish ! How big do they get ?

8 inches according to the sellers info I posted above… other reading seemed to indicate 6 to 8 inches… small size is what they have so mine are supposed to start at 1.5 to 2 inches long

Leporinus and Anostomus are two genera in the same family, Anostomidae. They share many common physical and behavioral traits. They like current, they jump, they do best in large numbers, the males spar, and they need some green food.

Oh , yeah , I must’ve skimmed over that . Eight inches ! Big fish like that are cool but it takes a big aquarium to make them look good .

I’m pretty sure lost one of my new Leporinus granti, it just didn’t look as stable as the other…

however the one has settled in well with the dollars I catch them eyeing it on occasion , but am pretty sure they are just making sure it’s not eating something they didn’t notice yet, as it hides most of the time, but swims among them a good amount of time… if they are still in stock on
my next order, I’ll get a few more, so he has another little buddy…

my 2nd pair are doing much better, and growing well, in my south American tetra tank.. been here about 3 weeks now, and have grown enough to notice… there is no problem between them, but they are very individual fish, often on opposite sides of the tank… this one seems to like the nest formed by a hastifolia leaf…
