Another Filter Question

What are the pros and cons of having an external filter which also acts as a water heater? I know it will mean less unsightly equipment in the tank but are they reliable? Does anyone have any experience of them and are they worth paying the extra for?

If you're referring to the Eheim with the built in thermo filter, avoid like the plague, unless you have super soft water it's useless, because the limescale builds up on the heating element and renders it nackered, if you want external heating your best bet is to get a hydor external heater, that runs inline with the filter.
