im got a 55 gallon aquarium with a depth of 17 inches and was looking to have a pair of angels i wanted to have livebearers but ive decided that ill do whats best and just go with the angels requirements. so what fish could i keep with them not icluding other chiclids though.

A nice shoal of rummynoses. They school real tight and are beautiful to watch, and they are chunkier than neons so they won't be eaten. If you REALLy like the neons, then go for cardinals, which grow as big as rummynonses (more or less) but don't school as well.

If the aquarium isn't open then some hatchetfish. They are frequent jumpers though, so you do need a covered aquarium for them.

Corys are a classic. You have a wide choice of species and they're all fine with angels. I suggest sterbai or adolfoi, but just because I like them a lot.

hachets eh so how about
7 hachets
pair of angels
6 cories
i guess if i could put any other chiclids id take suggestions

Hatchets will stay at the water's surface and corys will stay on the sand.
You'd have nothing but the angels in the middle.

If you want more cichlids I'd think of bolivian rams, they are nice and hardy and will coexist peacefully with your angels.

in 55 gallons you have room for more corys. If you're not adding a school of tetras you can take the number to 10.

Yup, my 2 bolivians and angels are great together.  My angels picked off a couple of my rummynose :/  But none of my harlequins!

Bolivians would love a planted tank

great should i get a pair would they be aggressive or terrotorial to the angels?

I would consider getting two pairs, they are fairly social fish.

That would make the complete stocking of your tank (my suggestion obviously, nothing more)

2 angelfish
4 bolivian rams
8 marbled hatchetfish (remember, closed aquarium or they WILL jump out)
8 sterbai corys

If you want four bolivians, I suggest 1m 3f. With two males in a 55g, you would have to set it up so they each have their own territory, and they will potentially fight over females.

ok sounds good if the angelfish were to spawn would they kill the rams though

There would be aggression, yes, but the rams would keep out of their way, they're not stupid...

To be honest, the only time my bolivians and angels cross paths is when the angels are picking pellets off of the substrate, bolivians are bottom dwellers.  My angels spawn every two weeks, and my bolivians could care less bc it's not in their territory.

ok thats good so i think i have my stock here but would rummys be better than hatchet fish?

depends what you want really. I think rummynose are much more striking looking, and from my experience, school tightly but still like to zip around, which is pretty awesome to watch. But again, i purchased my rummynose when they were smaller and my angels took out a couple of them lol.
