Can't beleve I was so stupid, I have been so carefully with new fish since the outbreak in the big tank and QT all my new fish, but last week added a baby BN pleco I found in my local lfs straight to my fry tank.....now my babies have the dreaded ich....I have 4 dalmation mollies 2 months old, 1 guppy 1.5 months, my platy fry that I found and my new babies bought last week, have started treatment with kordan rid ich plus, I used this before with my big tank and it worked very well but I also had the heat turned up, should I turn up the heat on the babies? I am not sure they would cope with it especially the younger ones.....

Sorry to hear of your troubles!

Best thing you can do now is to turn the temperature up slightly - this speeds up the cycle of Ich. Dose the water, but, with a half dose. Position the filter for added surface agitation or add an airstone. I'd even turn the lights off, and restrict feeding a little by reducing the amount you feed.

good luck
J

Oh god, sorry to hear that. You seen my thread about how long it took me- about 2 weeks if I remember correctly- to get rid of it, water changes, salt and high temps.
Good luck.

oh no!!! luckily i've never had ich (can you get it in temperate tanks?) but i'm paraniod about it just from reading about it and my new male variatus platy had to put in quarantine all on his own. :(
good look with the treatment!!!!

I remember coz I had it in the big tank at the same time....been so paranoid about new fish too.....just wasn't thinking straight when I bought the pleco home...what an idiot!

Woke up this morning and the baby Platy only has 1 spot on its tail (2 yesterday)the larger baby Guppy has one on his dorsal fin and 1 on a side fin ( tail and back had spots yesterday) can't see any spots on the tiny babies the Molly's are white so hard to tell but looking at the fins they seem ok....might have caught this just in time??? FINGERS CROSSED...... Big water change with gravel vac today.QUESTION, would it be worth removing the plants and giving them a bit of a salt bath to try and kill anythy of the parasites lurking in them? ( live plants).

That's good, fingers crossed for you hun. I had one spot on my fry for ages, I remember feeling so defeated. Don't give up, you've went through it once, you'll get through it again :good:

I know it is a long road to recovery but was just so glad that it did not get any worse overnight was expecting to wake up with more spots not less....just hoping to get rid of it before the other 2 females decide to drop a few dozen more babies into the mix...

There is no point to removing and treating the plants. You are not treating your fish with ich medication, you are treating the tank water with ich parasite poisons. All of the spots need to fall off of all fish and the treatment must then continue for a few days to get the last of the ich parasites.

FishLover4+1, temperate fish get ich just as easily as tropicals but they are harder to treat because they do not tolerate the higher temperatures well. It just means that it takes longer to complete their treatments.

Thanks Old Man, I didn't think treating the plants was a great idea, just clutching at straws I guess.

Oh yeah I know that feeling. I got it shortly after the fry were here. I was frantic!
I am now thinking that cobra female is sterile as she hasn't produced any fry and i've had her for a while now. Oh well.

Ok so yesterday a did a huge water change and vacuumed the gravel till it sparkled, added more rid ich+, had a good look at my babies and no spots on the Platy, the one larger guppy still has his 2 spots and unfortunately found I spot on the tail of one tiny baby, the Molly fry stil look ok as do the other babies...1 step forward 2 steps back seems to be the way it gos with ich so going to keep doing what I am doing and hope for the best.

That's always the way, You think you are making progress then see more spots. Keep going, don't get disheartened. We don't get rid ich in the shops here so it would have had to be online which I didn't have time for so just stuck with the salt.
You will get through it :)
