Nice and simple, Ive seen an Uaru yesterday about 6 inches maybe bigger that has been in the store a number of months dont know if you saw the thread or not in tropical discussions about an LFS in the middle of nowhere that is a bit over run with fish like these. Cant stop thinking about this Uaru though he was just gorgous and totally deserved a better home, right now he is in about 25 gallons with other fish, a few kribs, mollies and various tetras and some small plecs.

My tank is a 240 with fluval FX5 stocking now as follows
1 Heros Severus (true)
1 Female Nic
4 Geophagus sp Tocantis
6 Lake Kubutu Rainbow Fish
8 Annostomus Ternetzi (3 adult 5 babies, non related)
2 Sturisoma Aurem (whiptail cats)
3 5 inch adult L number plecs (L135 + L75)

Ive been given the go ahead to start looking for a 4x2x2 but its got to be cheap and easy to get here so not going to count chickens with that one just yet, as Ive been saying for a while I graduate in a month and am planning to move house as soon as I have a job and sold this place, at which point a 6x2x2 minimum will be the tank on order probably bigger though...

What do I do.... I know my tank is stocked now and potentially over stocked in the long term but most of my fish like the rainbows and geos are going to take a while yet to get any size on them, but what should I do... I just feel so bad for it in the little tank :(

its atough 1 to call mate. as you said youre stretching your stocking as it is and much as you wnt to give the fella a better home , you cant be sure exactly what and when you will be able to upgrade to . i can see why you want him but personally if it was me i would wait for the upgrade before i added any more fish, especially when mixing cichlids.

If you are going to get a new larger tank in less then a year go for it. But I found when adding larger fish to other larger fish things don't go as smooth as adding babies together. I'm sure you know this but getting one means you are going to have to get more uarus. once you have the big tank up. So how much do you like uarus?

It's your call you know you fish do you think they will take well to a new guy? Do you really want it? I sold my rescue. I saved her got her looking good then found her a good home. You could do that kind of rescue.

Hi thanks for the replies, had bit more of a think about it and Im not going to do it. I might be helping the uaru out but it would be stretching this tank to far, so the plan is to keep looking for this 4x2x2 for now and then go back and have an other look at him. I imagine he will still be there and at the end of the day if he isnt then thats not such a terrible thing.

I do like uarus wanted some for years so would have happily got him a few buddies at some point, just out of interest what do you reckon I would need for 2 or 3 sevs, 4 geo tocantis (bit like altifrons but around 8 inches) 3 Uarus and a female nic? Im thinking around 180 - 200 gallons?

I was going to get a 4x2x2 for my nic and hrps when I move as well as the SA 6x2x2 (+) but the HRPs have turned out as all males so they are having to go soon and I cant justify spending £500 on a tank for the nic and since my water is neutral/hard here shes going to be fine in the SA tank as she grows. But yeah see how that goes hopefully she will stay as calm as she is now...

a wise move mate . :good: theres nothing to syop you getting it if its there still when you upgrade

6'x2'x2 = 180 gal is my dream tank it's the perfect size. You could have 3 severums in a 125 gal 6' I think easy. A 4 foot tank just does not have enough run away space you know. Is a 4'x2'x2 you could do Get away with 3 severums just be careful.

In a 180 I see no problem keeping 4 12" cichlids with a few other smaller ones.

Are you thinking
2 severums
3 uaru
5 red head geo Tapajo ( they are a bit smaller and

I think that would be fine in a 180 gal as long as they all get along.

Ive got the tocantis on grow out now, these are a type of altifrons but where as most altifrons get blue down their sides these get red and orange metalic sparkles.

To be honest Im wanting 4 sevs maybe.... Im thinking of going as big as possible, I really dont want anything smaller than a 6x2x2 contemplating either a 7x2x2 or a 6x 30 inches x2

But yeah im thinking of the sevs, uarus, geos and maybe if i can find them some adult guinacaras with my female nic, going to rehome my young hrps at some point but really attached to my nic so I will hope she sticks around. But as with all things new world cichlid it depends on their temperment....

Im also hoping to get a rack of 4x2x18 inchers to go in the garage when we move going to put a stud wall up and use them for breeding and separating if needed. But if we get a house with a shed or outbuilding I reckon a fish house will be in order :D

Sweet. Sounds like a good plan but lots of work. My 3 tanks are enough work for me but I have a toddler too. I hope you find a nice extra large tank I'm sure you will have an awesome set up. I don't see why you can't keep you fish just keep they tank you have for them?

Yeah hoping that the racking system will be able to be kept quite low maintenance just doing a water change out of the sump ...... but would that drain water from the top tank to much......... hummm I think ill need to ask more questions closer to the time.

I don't see why you can't keep you fish just keep they tank you have for them?

Sorry dont understand what you mean here?

You talk of rehomeing some of your fish like the niic and hrp why not keep them in the tank you have now?

Ah right yeah rehoming the HRPs because they have all turned out male but keeping my nic but putting her in a CA tank. I was going to get 2 tanks a 4x2x2 and bigger one the 4x2x2 was going to be Central cichlids and the bigger was going to be a south american but I was only doing this mainly for the nic and I just can justify a £400 tank for her and new fish I would rather get an XXL south american tank and keep her with them in that. Want to get a custom made tank to match the furniture in the new house, the girlfriend seems to care more about the colour and shape of the stand than the size of the tank so I reckon I could go massive if the room can take it depends what house we find.

How attached to the nic are you? i loved the way my female looked, but she was nasty, espech. to Geos, maybe offload her to get the Uaru?

People say both Uaru and Geos do best in groups, i find they just fight lol

Ive been warned about my nic but so far so good shes been totally fine with everything. My geos nip each other a bit but nothing too bad just lots of flaring, even if I did swap the nic for the uaru I still think it would push the tank too far this tanks is just too crammed now but in good news just got back from looking at houses :)

That so exciting about the house. Will this be your first? Is it a buyers market over there too? Good luck on your house hunt that's great.

erm kind of I live with my girlfriend now and the apartment is hers but when we move it will be ours :) Im about to graduate so looking for a job now (meant to be filling out application form now) and then pretty much as soon as Ive got a job put this place on the market then move to a house/ public aquarium :)
