An Idea For Breeding Egg Scatterers

Before anyone says it I'm aware scatterers probably isn't correct english.

Anyways, my idea was to get some chicken wire type mesh of the same dimensions at the tank and of a smaller hole size than the adult fish... pop a few supports underneath it (rocks/stones/bricks etc). And then put it in the tank. You'd probably still need to remove the adults after they scatter the eggs but the mesh would probably result in many more eggs surviving.

Another idea was to actually raise the 'partition' relatively high (say a 1/3 of the height of the tank) and then just leave the adults in. The fry would have plenty of space to develop and would probably not leave the safety of the 'nursery' anyways.

Just some ideas... might be of use for someone who wants to try breeding some egg scatterers but doesn't have the room for the extra tank.

Lol really? Wow...never heard of it before. I was just thinking to myself earlier that I might dedicate half of my 60l to galaxy rasbora (or similar) if the CRS don't work out but that I wouldn't be able to separate any eggs (not to mention that I wouldn't necessarily even be there when they laid them).

But okies...maybe it's not as revolutionary as I though

Better than chiken wire is to use plastic canvas that way you avoid rust, it's what i used to breed golden barbs

I have an old aquarium book i inherited with a tank and it shows a plastic net type device attached to the tank about quarter of the way up and acts like trap that the eggs fall through it,whilst the adults are above.

Good thinking anyway

Using large marbles is another technique I've read, with the eggs falling into the spaces between them, out of rweach of the spawners.

My favourite was adding a a wire trough to the tank (suspended from the top two sides) in a curved shape, running the entire length of the tank. the adults have plenty of room to swim/breed, plants can poke up through etc. but the parents can also be easily removed.
