hi all, im in the nitrogen stage of my cycle (my 100 litre tank) and every thing was going perfectly fine until yesterday) i went to test my ammonia for ppm to see if i needed to add any more ammonia when i checked it went from yellow to light green to dark green to a dark blueish colour

its an API test kit
thanks

blue is off the scale...you need to do a massive water change! ammonia levels higher than 8 will kill filter bacteria, so your hard work maybe ruined :(

nooo!!!, im away to do a water change what chould have caused this!

Has anyone else been dosing the tank? Did you double dose or lose count of how much went in (I did this in my first fishless cycle)

continually adding ammonia without testing levels first...wash your tubes out thoroughly and try again

my mum did it while i was at my dads (theyre split up, i just told her to add 4ml each night for 3 nights)

that might be where your problem lies, other possible causes could be decaying plant mass or anything else that will decay

If it helps - I just got a horribly dark green colour on my ammonia test today and had to do a water change, despite not having put any in since tuesday! If it all goes down the shoot, at least you're not the only one who's going there!

I just did a 66% water change and the readings are

ammonia: 2 ppm
nitrite: 0.50 ppm

what do u recommend i do now?

Your fishless cycling yeah,id leave it now, wait until ur down to 0PPM and dose back up to 4-5 as per the instructions on fishless cycling. However if the overdose has killed all ur bacteria then it will take a long time to get down to the zero.

yeah fishless cycling, is it normal that after that 66% water change for ammonia to be down to 2 and nitrite 0.50

bump it up to five and you will be able to see in the morning whether any harm has been done
