Ammonia Levels

Hi, I have just done some test on my tank water for my small tank, I used the API liquid test kit, prior to doing the tests I washed the filter sponge in a basin of tank water, being a small internal filter a lot of gunk fell in to the tank water, could this have caused and Ammonia reading of 5 ?
Any advice greatly appreciated......

Hi there,

Gunk from the filter won't cause the tank to give a high ammonia reading as the ammonia would already be in the tank. The filter converts the ammonia to nitrate and then to nitrite which you remove by water changes. It would be helpfull if you could post what size your tank is, what fish you have in it and how often you do water changes.

How long has the tank been set up? Did you do a fishless or fish in cycle?

I would suggest a big water change of about 50-70% and test it daily until the ammonia reading drops to zero.

Cheers, was thinking of a strip down and rescape anyway,
