have just tested my tap water and there is 1.5 ammoina in it!!
what now???
that is the exact reading i am getting from my tank so maybe there is no ammoina in there after all???
arhhhh??? ????

no its not!!! (cycled) well the new tank isnt!
shouldnt it be removed?

If it's in the tap water, there's really nothing you can do except treat it. I would suggest switching to Prime as a dechlorinator if you don't use it already. It detoxifies ammonia so that it won't harm the fish while the filter breaks it down. You could also get some Ammo-Lock for the same purpose and just use your regular dechlor. Either way, you make the ammonia safe while it's processed. You may also want to call your water company just to make sure they are aware that the supply has ammonia in it.

Just for info RDD, Ammo Lock is a dechlorinator as well as an ammonia detoxifier, exactly the same as Prime. No other dechlorinator would be necessary. :good:

I keep forgetting that. I've never used it so just have this "ammonia only" thought of it in my head. I'm going to commit that to memory now. Of course, at my age my brain is full so that means I'll have to forget something to make room for it. Hope it isn't something important.

apparently according to API stress coat can be used to convert ammonia to ammonium just like ammo lock
I've read that on here numerous times but it isn't on the bottles. I've never used anything but Stress Coat. I just went and looked at the latest 1/2 gallon jug I bought and it makes no mention of detoxifying ammonia. Now their website says it "works instantly to remove chlorine, chloramines and ammonia" (which I would question) while the bottle says it "removes chlorine and neutralizes chloramine" so some what conflicting info. I'm just not certain how it can "remove" ammonia. Neutralize or detoxify, yes, but not remove.

thanks for the replys!
sorry have just read it again and its 0.5 not 1.5! as you can prob tell im very tired today!
thats better though isnt it?
thats what my tank readings also are 0.5!
tested nitrates and they are 50 in tap water? i thought there wouldnt be any or very low. will go and get some 'ammo lock' or stress coat 2moz,not sure wots avaibile in the uk.
thanks again

There are actually two different kinds of Stress Coats.

One kind is just the Stress Coat, which is a dechlorinator and removes heavy metals.

The other one is Stress Coat Plus, which removes ammonia, and it also is a dechlorinator and removes heavy metals as well.

Very strange. I just looked at the jug (about 3 months old), specifically the instructions this time, again and it doesn't mention it. I wonder if it's a difference between the US and UK???

Now that makes perfect sense. Never seen the SC Plus.

i always wondered what the plus stood for  ty

The question of ammonia in tap water has come up a couple of times recently, so I had a look on google. These "prescribed concentrations or values" are from the UK Drinking Water Inspectorate's site -

Nitrate mg NO3/l 50
Nitrite mg NO2/l 0.1
Ammonium (ammonia and ammonium ions) mg NH4/l 0.5

mg/l is the same as ppm

Some of you American members seem horrified by the amount of nitrate in UK tap water. As you can see, the water authorities in the UK are allowed to have up to 50 ppm.
