I've kept them for resale. They always came in drab looking. Once I got them in a planted tank, they would color up a bit (and munch on the softer plants). The male has red striping on the sides, whereas the female is a drabber yellowish. If the ones you see are drab and washed out, look for a black spot near the back of the female's dorsal fin. The male lacks this spot.
