I'm thinking of having an Amazon type set up.. It won't be an exact biotope as such, but I certainly want it to be something like.
My tank will have a black background, 4 or 5 large pieces of drift wood / branch type pieces. No plants at all. It will have the 'tea' look water with peat extracts being added with plenty of broken pieces of branches & possibly larger rounded dark stones on the bottom.
But I'm struggling on what substrate. I currently have the standard light neutral coloured small 3 to 4mm rounded gravel which I find too bright. Ideally I want 'Estes Deep River Gravel' but I just cannot get it in the uk. This has lots of black, dark brown & browns in it which I like the look of, but its only available in USA (which I guess would cost a fortune to ship, with me needing to cover 54inches by 15inches)
I've looked at the following on the net - ECO Complete, Seachem Flourite but this seems to suit a planted set up & is expensive + I'd be concerned I would syphon too much up during a water change? I like the idea of black Pettex gravel which I have a sample of but would 'black gravel' replicate any part of the Amazon at all? Not keen on sand you see
