Would amazon swords do ok in a low light tank? I’m not that bothered if they grow large, but would they be ok?

I’m trying to get some fairly large plants and small plants for a 45 gallon cold water tank.

Preferably goldfish proof too :)

Amazon Swords are tropical plants and as such I don't think they will do very well in a cold water environment. Otherwise, they are good low light plants.

I can't see any problems with them under relatively low light and at room temp. But I can see a problem with them and the goldfish...I wouldn't try it myself. I'd go for something a bit hardier like anubias...there are lots to choose from. :)

Amazon swords will survive with goldies , i have HUGE pair and they didnt eat swords (btw, riccia , cabomba will vanish in goldie mouth just like that). If the room light i really strong , then the plants will survive, otherwise will melt away slowly. (they need light to photosynthesize .

Fair enough. I've often taken my extra cabomba round to my boyfriends dad's house as a treat for their goldies so I knew that wouldn't last more than an hour or so lol. I figured swords looked pretty soft... but maybe they're bitter?

I am not sure if they bitter or not. i had big amazons and my goldies used it as shade to sleep. but the plant was there was some months, never disturbed, its leaves was kinda thick/green to nibble.

Interesting. I might still give them a try as my LFS sells them for 50p per bunch (I think their more expensive plants are something like £1.50 per bunch).

I want to plant my tank out with something but then something that wont be consumed really quickly! I have stuff in other tanks which when they get bigger I was going to try with the goldfish to see if it lasts.

I didn't fancy anubias as I have it in 2 other tanks :(; I fancied something different.

hi, do you have any lighting in the tank? i had an amazon sword in my tank with so much floating plant that you couldn't tell when the lighting was on, and it was growing really well. that was without ferts as well. i'd go for it. :good:

I only have the standard tank lighting and it's rarely on. The room is bright enough without the light. No harm in trying I guess (I'll check out the price at the shop first and decide from there :)).
