So i have been on AquaAdvisor and i got these results:

Warning: You NEED to add more aquarium filtration capacity!!!

Your aquarium filtration capacity for above selected species is 68%.
Recommended water change schedule: 22% per week.
Your aquarium stocking level is 73%

Do i need to add another filter?

I have the following in a Juwel Rio 240

1 x Dwarf Gourami
2 x Ottos
2 x Bamboo Shrimp
16 x Pseudomugil Rainbows
16 x Galaxy Rasbora
8 x Emperor Tetra
10 x Neon Tetra

Thanks :)

i wouldtn worry, the neon tetras aint worth any consideration, they are sooooo small :)

If you ever have traces of ammonia and/or nitrite, you'll know you're underfiltered. If your nitrates go up by 50 or 60ppm a week, you'll know you're overstocked ;)

Cheers guys

So, in your opinion, would i be ok to increase my numbers to 35+ Galaxys and 20+ Neons? That would give me over 80 fish

Thats a lot of midwater fish you have, maybe consider something that spends a lot of time on the bottom, maybe some corys? Would give the tank a little bit more of a balance.

I noticed you got a pleco? from the link in your sig, you might do well to get some bogwood in there and ditch the stone effect base thing, just doesnt seem to do anything for the tank imo.

Plecos have gone back now, and the kribs :good:

Golfzzin, we no longer allow that particular database on our forum because it is far to easy to treat any computer advice as gospel. Unfortunately, the author of that site thinks that the general guidance that results from ordinary advice by forum members should be reduced to an advice listing. He uses things like the plant fanatics 10x filtration as if the 2x that I use in some of my tanks simply will not work. Sorry, bad advice is just that, whether it is provided by human zealots or a computer database with a human programmer who is misinformed or maybe just misled.
If you have the standard filter that came with your tank, I would say that you have plenty of filtration and might even be able to easily tolerate a few more fish, but not many.

It would be nice if the database in discussion could be left linked on threads instead of deleted, i've just read your post with no clue what you are talking about, when in actual fact i might like to take a look at it (i know i posted before but cant for the life of me remember the site  ). While i understand mods of this forum wouldnt want to point its audience to other sites the hard lined approach isnt one that i feel comfy with, freedom of choice please.

if you are using a standard JUWEL filter, you do need an upgrade. even JUWELs own information states these filters are for lightly stocked planted tanks. whilst your tank is not over stocked, its well over the filters capacity. lets face it, JUWEL are the ones most likely to know.

how come you ditched the kribs?

also remember that the calculation it has given you is when the fish are fully grown, if you click use juvenile sizes and actually enter the true sizes of them now i bet your ok. so you may need another filter later but now your ok, if you get what i mean

Apologies, wasnt aware of that :good:

Kirbs were constantly fighting each other, well, more like one was. The other would spend all day hiding from the other. Their fighting also caused injury to other fish caught in the cross fire so back they went.

Yeh some of the fish i have right now are tiny.

If im honest too i may look at selling the Emperor Tetras at some point so i can increase the numbers of the neons and make their little lives happier. I also don't plan on replacing the Gourami once he 'moves out'

Thanks

Matt

Ok, i done some more looking into this, as i want to get it right, and not find out in 6 months time i have got it all wrong and my fishy world ends.

Iv calculated i have approx 60.7" of fish (once all grown up). I have assumed my tank is around 220l once substrate is accounted for. So for 1" of fish per US gallon (being 58 gallons) i am very slightly overstocked.

My stats have been constant now for weeks at

Ammonia - 0
Nitrites - 0
Nitrates - 20
P.H - 8.2

Temp has a high of 25.3 during the day and drops to 24.7 at night (using a Juwel Digital Thermometer)

I plan on testing every day this week and watching the Nirates to see at what rate they rise.

I am currently changing water twice per week with a minimum of 40l (so around 20% twice a week)

So with this in mind, my future plan is:

1 x Dwarf Gourami - don't replace once he moves out
2 x Ottos - add one or two more
15 x Pseudomugil Rainbows - im happy with this number, will keep it above 10
16 x Galaxy Rasbora - would like to increase to around 20
8 x Purple Emperor Tetra - in the future replace with 6 small corys
8 x Neon Tetra - ensure they stay at this number minimum

I plan on using the space the Gourami leaves by adding the Ottos/Galaxys and changing the Emperors for Corys (but not for a while, and thats if i can bring myself to do it)

This considered i should stay at around the same inches of fish per US gallon that im at now

Your thoughts?

everyone over stocks their tank mate, i wouldnt worry about what people say about strict stocking levels. As long as you can filter it, the water stays in good condition and the fish dont look jam packed in like sardines you will be ok. Common sense prevails above all and your plan seems fine.

Cheers bud

I have retested today, 4 days on from a 40l water change and everything seems to have held steady

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrates - still at 20

Im going to hold off from my next change till Monday, so i will be able to see just how much the Nitrates rise over the period of 1 week

Im also thinking of upgrading the filter. At the moment i have removed the carbon sponge and have a lot of mature media in there from my old tank, once i remove this il replace it with another Cirax box

This will then give me;

Poly Pad
Nitrax Sponge (Green)
Coarse Filter Sponge (Blue)
Cirax

Then in the bottom compartment

Cirax
Fine Filter Sponge
Fine Filter Sponge

I also plan on upgrading the Pump to a Bioflow 1000
