I'd be careful recommending that he keep the male, sylvia. I know platys aren't the same as guppies, but they're both livebearers. I have three guppies in a five gallon, only moderately planted. We got four fry and three of those four are still alive today and a little over 1/2 inch long. We were expecting them to get eaten, and they didn't, so now I get to upgrade tanks. It IS possible for the babes to survive and considering there is no possible way he can upgrade or get another tank entirely for the babes, it's probably best to avoid any possible propogation at all.
