Well it has been an eventful, and ultimately expensive and fruitless, few weeks with the G.altifrons.

I bought a trio, two then definately paired off and harrassed the third. So the third was rehomed.

Only for the "pair" to suddenly decide to want to kill each other. There was definately no love in the building for them on valentine's day that's for sure. Anyway, this has been going on for a few days. I even put in a divider for 48 hours to separate them and try and calm things down. But as soon as I removed the divider all hell broke loose again.
So, today I moved them on. The general advice I got was that altifrons work, and breed, so much better in a large group environment, where all this aggression is spread out. Unfortunately, all I had spare was the 300 litre tank, which is nowhere near big enough for a reasonable shoal of adult altifrons. I made quite a few mistakes really, in hindsight.

The 300 litre is now housing a couple of juvie rotties, a Satanoperca leucosticta, a small angel and a few small tetras. Hopefully, this will be a lot more relaxing !

I'd love to hear other's stories of their own complete disasters with fish .... just to make me feel a little better.

I just can't get fish to pair off naturally, they just end up fighting lol

I tried it with a group of 6 green Terrors, 12 Rotkeils, 6 Texas, 6 Efaciatus and loads of others

I find the fish that breed for me are the ones i don't want to.

So far I have accidentally bred

Convicts
Yellow Labs
Convict x Sajica
Flowerhorn x Convict
Blood parrots (male was infertile)
Blood Parrot x Convict

I can get mine to pair, drop breeding tubes , clean stones and then NOTHING :shout:

Did have red spot sev spawn but never got the chance to see if the male was sterile or not cos the salvini ate eggs and a GBR spawned with no male

My stupid blue acaras had a love hate thing going on then the female stressed the male so bad he died. They would spawn and be in love for 1 day. Then they would fight over the eggs. Who ever own would not let the other near the nest. It was bad.

I've still yet to re-introduce "mum" and "dad" Lionhead Cichlids some three months or so after he beat her up badly, presumeably wanting to start another batch of fry when the batch of eleven youngsters were six weeks old. "Mum" must have been terrfied, as she was treading water in one of the top corners (very un-natural when these cichlids have virtually no swim bladder), with every fin in tatters. Since then he has behaved and is in great shape down in the 5-footer, living in harmony with the tankmates including the other two female Lionheads I bought last summer, while mum has raised the brood in the Rio240.

Hopefully you will have more luck with your community, hamfist, as you have had to juggle various stocking in recent months.

I will get in touch about inviting you over here to see your old Brochis and my other fish soon, I do appear to be doing regular six-day weeks and I only get Saturdays off once every six weeks (the day I know suits you). ;)
