Allergic Reaction?

Yesterday I did some plant pruning/separating in my tropical aquarium which involved submersing most my right arm in water in and out over about a 2 hour period. Most of my arm started to itch and appeared as though it had a rash. As there were not cuts or breaks in the skin I didn't wash my arm straight away when it was itching but chose to finish off what I was doing in the aquarium.

What in the water could have been causing this reaction? Maybe the fertilisers?

It is the water, most likely something which lives in it. I get the same with certain tanks: it appears to be related to low-pH (under 6.0) planted tanks in some way.

Those plants are practicing allelopathy on you.
