hey all i am no longer gettin a fish tank as my mum is being a fool! :( sayin it'll be too loud etc etc! so no fish tank for me! thanks you all for your help and advice anyways! :D

Um...where was the tank going to be located? Some people might not like the air pump noise...but if it's not in a bedroom it shouldn't be a big deal. Sorry you're having trouble.

there is no need for an air pump, just need the waters surface aggitated

Yes - I know the air pump isn't required - that was just the loudest accessory I could imagine someone saying being too loud. Without an air pump, I'm not sure what noise there could be!

No she is talkin about the filter! as my little brother used to have i little fish tank and had a crappy filter it was quite loud...but the filter i was going to use was a fluval 4+, and the was going to be in my room which is right next to hers!

I had fluval in 10 gal, which was just next to my bed. Very quiet

I would go as far to say a fluval 4+ would be near silent. You certainly will not be able to hear it next door.

Although, knowing mums, to me its probably more a case of she thinks you are not ready for the responsibility.

She will just be using the noise thing as an excuse to say no!

Not necessarily. My Mum hated the noise of the fish tanks in the room when she stayed over. She could hear them through the vibrations (Mums can be a sensetive bunch, lol). Although now I only have the 15g in the room it doesn't disturb her at all.
One of my downstairs air pumps is noisy, but it is over 15 years old so bygones.
Give your Mum time, she may come round. Make sure you appease her (you know, do the washing up etc without being asked). Mums like that sort of thing. I know, I am a Mum. :p
P.

Could you try asking her if you can get it and you'll not put any fish in it, just let it run for a few days. And if she thinks it's too noisy then you'll sell it straight away? Ask her to just give you a chance to proove yourself.

Try to explain fluval as far as fish brands go is like sony is to tv's. It's a top make, so top quality, so very silent.

Come to think of it I have a superfish aqua flow 50 in my 35l tank which is literally 20cm from my head and that is actually silent. Plus how I have the spray bar set up there is turbulence at the surface, but the surface isn't actually broken so no noise at all, not even watery noise nvm electrical noise.

Tell her that my filter (also a Fluval U range) is the grand total of about 4 foot away from my head in bed and I can't hear it atall. It's that quiet I'm more likely to hear one of the fish splash.

She's thinking of airpumps which yes in my option ARE noisy ^*^%^(^7s but still not so loud you can hear in the next room :S

My parents told me all sorts about fish when I started keeping them

According to my nan the tank would smell and make the room smell... I was like 'No... my dad's tank was badly kept and badly looked after which is why it smelt. I'll take it down if you're right'

I was also told that filters were noisy, I just pointed out technology had moved on and that they should stop judging things based on a one off experience.

LOl yeah, the old fashioned advice is funny. When I first kept fish briefly when I was a kid my grandad told me all I needed was a pump and an airline.

Mind you he did keep quite healthy Guppies and "a big thing on the bottom that bit him" for years apparently.

Hey. Can you get your mum (mom in the US) to post here under your name and list her concerns. Maybe if she hears from all us nice folks she will feel more comfortable about it. It is an idea.

Agree with Karin - might be worth a shot. Your mom will only get honest feedback here.
