Algae Killer?

I have used a couple of brands in the past and they all worked, but I have live plants now and wasn't sure if Algae remover/killers would have a negative effect on my live plants. I'm having a hard controling the algae mostly on my Java Moss, I find it extremely hard to get off. Anyone have any advice, thanks.

How bigs the tank? I dont normally recommend getting fish to clean the algae but if is a good sized heavily planted tank with lots of algae a group of ottos would be great in there.

You'd be better off working on the cause of your algae.

How could I go about figuring out the cause? I do agree that ottos are great for algae, but the problem is that I have a Jag and two Pike cichlids in the tank. The tank is 75 gallons.

did you look at the link? Jame's algae guide..?

What kind of algae is it you have?

How many live plants do you have?

What plants are they?

What lighting do you have and how long do you have it switched on for?

Do you use air stones?

Do you use anything to feed your plants?

aquahydrotech have a Extract of barly straw liquid on the market now,no chemicals in it could be a short term solution till you get to the bottom of whats causeing the problem.

Do the following...

Manually clean out as much algea as possible + 50% water change (depending on how over-run you are, you might be able to do less)

Turn out the lights, and stop any light getting into the tank. Leave the tank for 5 days in this state. Dont peek, just be patient.

When you unveil the tank again, do another manual clean of anything left (should be nothing really) and another water change.

Your tank will now be algea clear. Your plants might look a bit lean for a few days afterwards, but will pick up again soon enough!

This gives you a nice clean slate to work with, and totally nailed the algea problem in my tank.
