Air Pumps

The only use for an air pump (not used to drive a sponge filter) is to make pretty bubbles and add surface agitation.

If you're going down the planted tank route most ppl avoid the use of air pumps with air stones.

I do have one in my smallers planted tank but I mainly have ferns and moss in there and they are very undemanding. If you decide to start adding Co2 you'll want to limit anything that increases gas exchange at the surface.

Noticed someone selling a rena air 300 cheap locally and just wondered whether it's something I should consider for my new larger tank. What exactly do they do?

they look good, and very little more. in truth, the only time they add O2, is when the bubbles break the surface. so you are much better off, using your filter outlet to cause surface disruption. they are simply decoration.

Cool. I won't bother then. Cheers. :)
