Air pumps are not useless at all. I've set mine up so the bubbles are blown across the water by the filter. This will probably get the full potential of an air pump, unless u just want it as an ornament which alot of people do. The movement of the bubbles causes a current in the uplift tube so th water in the undergravel filter (if you have one) comes out almost straight away. This causes alot of the waste to go to the bottom and some gets pulled into the filter.
Also, wild caught fish (i.e. hillstream loaches) are used to high oxygen level in the water. I remember when one of my rats bit through my cold water air tube and 2 of the little things died.
If I were you I would greatly condiser an air pump.
