Its already been said but i must stress that during these hot spells you MUST have as much aeration as possible to allow enough gas exchange, the warmer the water the less free oxygen it can carry and that is what kills the fish.

Make sure that filter outlets are directed towards the surface and that the filter is positioned as close to the surface as possible, if needed drop the water line a few inches to bring it closer. If the fish are still showing signs of being unhappy (rapid breathing, hanging near the top, stress colours showing) then install additional powerheads or airstones to increase surface agitation.
Keep all lighting off and only switch it on to a bare minimum needed for viewing and try to keep the tanks out of direct sunlight as much as possible.

We just don't really have air con in our houses in the UK. In our offices - yes, even in our cars (fairly recently) but it generally doesn't get hot enough to warrant spending out on air con in the house! I love air con - it's a bit too much of a luxury though when there's bills to pay!!

All i do in hot weather is make sure the filter is going at its full potential and increase aeration.
Never had a fish near the top of the tank even when the temp has gone quite high.

hehe no house ive ever been in has had air con. i can see how living in some parts of america you can wonder how we live without it though, i remember visiting florida and having to take short breaks in shops where it was nice and cool :p

Im confused. My temp hasnt changed at all and my room is getting really hot. Surely the heater will only turn on if the water drops a certain temp and work less if the temp is reached through heat of the room? People are saying their tanks are getting too hot is that because the heaters are still going on when they shouldnt?

mine are at 34'C (93'F) im keeping the lights off, the windows open, lids off and 4 fans in the room

(no deaths yet, which is suprising, my tanks are getting REALLY hot)

No, it's because of this blistering heat we are suddenly lucky enough to have. heaters that work with a thermostat should turn themselves off when the water is too high, so there is no need 2 turn them off.

Air conditioning in England? Meh! We only get a few weeks of weather like this, there's no point! Although an air-conditioned fish tank would be ideal.. for all weather. hmmm.......

lol i live in pennsylvania, doesnt get that hot, but sometimes, still everyone has them though. and the winters we get like 3 feet of snow every week lol. its interestiing to hear what other countries are like. ive learned fish + culture , that more than i learn in public school :X

I know what you mean.

I grew up in the South, but when I moved to NYC once I was amazed to find these folks didn't have air conditioning! Only the high dollar apts had it. But that was supposed to be slowly changing as more and more people were getting window air conditioners when I was there.

I had no idea that the UK doesn't use a lot of "air con" until now. Ya learn somethin new every day. :good:

havent people in enland ever heard of air conditioners???? works wonders for my tanks this time of year.....
 for the few odd weeks called "summer" here in the UK, it's just not something people generally invest money in.

 We just go and buy a fan from B&Q.

my tanks are getting hot hot hot too we increase aeration by turning up the airpump & also we start freezing bottles of water.empty tonic bottles or milk containers( always have g&t supplies in my house!!!) rinse them out fill with water freeze & then on really hot days chuck a couple in the big tank- brings the temp down really well if its starting to climb. i dont empty them after just rinse the outside & chuck them back in the freezer so we've always got a few
ive also had our baby tank lights off today as well & just one light on in the big tank & that makes a huge difference.
ive only been living in london uk for 5 years & i find that the temperature here feels much much hotter than you'd think it would, i spent a lot of my life in perth australia where it reg got up to 45c in summer & i honestly feel hotter here in london at 27c.........i guess the houses here are built for the cold rather than the heat.our flat is b***y boiling!

mines hit 30 today, i`ve added some ice packs, tanken the lid off and added the air pump, none of the fish seem to be suffering much, one moly had a cloudy eye who has been removed to another tank aqnd a dose of melafix added
