Hi, as you might know i've already got a 90ltr coldwater set up. Have recently got a 25ltr tropical aquarium, and found a bargain for 25quid on a 24" x 12" x 18" high aquarium. needs a new lid but got it with the filter, heater etc etc all brand new.

During transit, it gained a crack to the base, 2, 3 inch max. can't be felt on the inside or outside of the tank. So was wondering if i were to seal it with silicone or something would it still be suitable for use?

I really want to use this tank for a new tropical set up, it's a nice size, but i also need to know that the ltr capacity would be for this tank on the above dimensions? any ideas?

Thanks xx

One of the hardware experts might be cruising by and help you with this but I would also post it in the "Hardware and DIY" forum.

Good Luck,

from the practical fishkeeping website i used the calculator and estimated for you

System type
Dimensions 61 x 30 x 46cm/24" x 12" x 18
Surface area 0.18 sqm/1.94 sq ft/ inches sq in
Volume 85 l./19 gal. (22.45 US gal.)
Probable volume 77 l./17 gal. (20 US gal.)

sealant should be fine, you could always use some, pop a bit of water in it, and keep an eye on it to make sure it doesnt leak :)

hope that helps

thanks for the conversion on the measurements, it's a big help.... now i can plot to stock!!

what i'm thinking of doing is using aquarium silicone, sealing it underneath, and then getting a patch of glass and siliconing that to the inside to cover the crack... that should hold it well enough. am taking no chances.

...*still chuffed at my bargain*

The glass patch is a very good idea.
Tank volume is easy for you metric people (that's what they told me in school). Multiply length by width by height and it will give you volume in cubic centimeters. Divide the answer by 1000 and you have liters.
By comparison our system is antiquated. A cubic foot is about 7.5 US gallons so we work with fractions of a foot to get the answer. In your case it's 2 ft by 1 ft by 1.5 ft so 3 cubic feet. 7.5 by 3 is 21.5 and figure its a little smaller because you measured the outside instead of the inside so about 20 US gallons.

Hi,

I hope your cracked tank is fine,
I worked in a glass facotry for some years and knowing glass a little my worry would be has the crack ran out or does it still have an end that can run?

Id do what you suggested with the glass patch and silicone and put a small amount of water i it and see how it goes as you add a small amount, as weight goes onto a glass plate the crack could run on its own accord again.

Good Luck

it looks like the tank is built and held with silicone, and the corner that has the crack runs in a semi circle around the bottom corner of the tank, so there it can't really run any further in any direction.

am getting the glass patch tomorrow. will update you on how it goes.

Sounds like your on to a winner...

If it were me and its only a small tank Id be inclined to get a stanley blade and take the whole base off and silicone on a new piece depending on the glaziers down your way a small piece of 6mm wouldnt cost you that much and would give you piece of mind and its not a big job..

Good Luck.. :good:

got the glass for the patch today and the silicone, glass didn't push the bank balance over...was only 43p!! so will be repairing either tonight or tomorrow.
