Don't even think about breeding them until you have researched it a lot, its not something you should take to lightly, you will get a lot of fry and they take time and money to look after. They are great pets though, there is a lot of info on here already. But I would suggest a 2.5g to 5g tank for one male on his own with lots of plants and hiding places. You will need a heater and ideally a filter as well.

If you want a Betta ideally you need at least a 2g tank with a heater. A filter is optional but if you choose not to get one then you will need to do more frequent water changes. They also prefer to have plants in their tank to hide amongst.
As for breeding, I really wouldn't rush into it without experience. It can be a long process and you need to be well and truly prepared. You'd need a bigger tank than a 2g for breeding and would need a seperate tank for a female. Plenty of jars or the like are needed for when the fry are big enough plus a spare tank to keep your male in once the fry have hatched. Also, Bettas can spawn up to 500 eggs, not all surviving, but thats a hell of a lot of jars and hard work!
My advice would be to read up and research whatever fish you decide to breed and leave the Bettas until you have a lot more experience behind you. :)
