Hi peeps,

I have a lovely second hand Eheim 2028 filter that was a bargain, but was used in a marine tank. Can i use this on my fresh tank?

Im running a 2028 already and want to just swap over the filters like-for-like old media to new if possible, but after extensive washing its still salty to the taste....yes taste, i'm insane i know but its the only test i have!

Thanks for any info

hi, my filter (and tank for that matter) was second hand and it was marine before I got it, I took all the media out and binned it along with the pipes and inlet and outlet, though the inlet and outlet just needed a good scrubbing really. I did the taste test as well  I know what you mean. I scrubbed mine but I also put very hot water in it and left it over night, I also set it up in a large bucket for a while with no media in so that the water kind of washed it through, you could hook it upto a tap as well, once its full and water runs through it will break down any residue left I think.

Also the other thing to consider is that any coating left in the filter walls will be diluted down by the water in the tank and that should make it not even register as a salt amount in the water. But up to you as to how much more you want to try i reckon.

Thanks for the the reply bro!

You've clarified what i was thinking really. A trace of salt gonna make a difference in the long run,

I will do what you recommended though, set it up with water, run it for a while scrubbing etc. Introduce some hot water and taste it every so often

The more rinse the better.

cheers dude!
