Im planning to add external filter to my marine tank. Can I just take it out from the box, plug it in and thats it??? Or should I take something from the filter that is now running and put some in in the new one??

you could do either mate! what i would do is wait untill you do a W/C then rinse out the filter sponges from the external in old tankwater and then set it running once the tank is full again... this will get rid of the chemicals on the sponges without exposing it to chlorine

I wouldnt bother taking and media out of the existing as cycling time wont really differ (and you already have a filter in there).

you would only really need to put cycled media in a new filter if you has thrown the old filter away or you were setting up a new tank.

hope this helps
