Activated Carbon

For the 55 gallon I've been setting up, I purchased a Marineland "HOT" Cannister Filter, that hangs off the back. Originally I wanted the Eheim, but it shipped to me broken and I couldn't find them locally. The Marineland has been working great, cleared the water right up after I added sand, but the only media is came with was Activated Carbon. I used it simply because I didn't have anything else.
I'm wondering if the carbon is okay to use, and if I should add any other media, and if so what?

You will need some sort of sponge and rings i think as these are the main areas that the bacteria live. Carbon is something that isn't necessary to have in a filter, but can be useful for removing tannins and medications.
