im planning a bigger tank in a year or 2 when i go marine lol
my current tank is almost 3 and a half foot.. id like one thats 4 foot wide - 2 foot high and almost 2 foot wide - but this seems to cost a small fortune
For that size glass would be better. There's a few 'standard' ones of that size- 4x2x2, 4x18x18 and similar. Acrylic tends only to be an advantage when the tank is question is very big.
Acrylic will usually cost more than glass but is stronger in smaller amounts (so does not need to be as thick as an equivalent glass tank), is lighter and does not suffer from "greening" (once the tank walls get very thick the glass will be noticeably greener than acrylic). Problem for acrylic are the scratching as noted above as well as some reports of it yellowing in old age.
If you just buy a glass 4x2x2 tank than it shouldn't cost much more than £150.
