So, I've done the 50% water change and cleaned the gravel fairly well.. I just started to raise the temp of the tank water.. Going slowly so matters aren't made worse. At what point do I add my medication? Immediately after tank water reaches 85-86 degrees? Or can I add to water now even thou it's just at 82 and rising? Also can I do water changes and gravel cleanings during medication treatment? How long after I add medication should I stop its use? I know I need to remove carbon filter but, since I have a canister filter how do I adequately clean it once medication is complete? Do I continue running canister filter during treatment? A few of the details are confusing me here and I need to make sure I do this right.. I have also added an airstone for aeration.. Please help me.. First bout with the ick! Thanks in advance

Mikey

I must stress, that this is in my opinion (as there is much controversy), but for ich, I've never added any sort of medication and have always successfully treated it by simply raising the temperature to approx 31 deg C, keep it there for 3 days, & gradually bring it down to "normal" again... (26/27). Nothing else is required. (I.M.O.)

I need additional help people.. please
Remove carbon from filters and you can add the medication now. Make sure you follow the directions. I just got rid of ick in my tank. Took about 1 week. Did the medication, 86degF & aquarium salt trick.

I would add the med now that you have started to raise temp gradually it speeds the life cycle up.
Don't forget to increase aeration with the high temp and med.
If you preform a water change during a med course you just add the correct amount of med back to water removed.
When med course has finished just add some new filter floss or mating and add some new black carbon to the filter.
Carbon only works for up to 2 to 9 days so better off removing it after 9 days.

So once the ich is dead its dead? Like it won't be lingering in my canister filter or my substrate decorations?

Yes! Yes! yes!..... as they do not reproduce after 3 days at higher temp, they are Gone, gone, gone!!.....

I'm reading so many different threads stating what temperature is best for treating the ich... What is the best temp when treating? I am at 85 maybe 86 degrees F... raise, lower or hold steady? When can I begin to lower the temp back to regular 78 degrees F? thx

It can linger if you don't do the full treatment. Parasites are tricky. Just because you can not see ich does not mean it's gone. The little buggers can hide in the gills, nose, mouth of the fish. So it is best to continue treating even when you think its all gone. They say 13- 14 days of treatment is best. It depends on how badly infested the tank was to start with. For one fish living in it's own little tank you will not need to treat for more then a week really.

The best way to fight a parasite is to fully understand it's life cycle. Each parasite has a different one.

here is some info on Ich so you can win the fight.

They also say keeping the light off during treatment if you are using Malachite green. The Malachite green can get broken down by light making it less effective.
