Ive been able to get in touch with a guy who can supply me with mbuna so i can stock my tank properly rather than how it is at the moment.
I would like to hang on to the following.
4x Labidochromis Caerulus
1x Metriclima Greshakei
1x Pseudotropheus Socolofi Albino
1x Melanochromis Cyaneorhabdos
1x Metriaclima Callainos

Thats what i would like to keep if people think i should loose something else im open all ears this is now what i have wittled down the list of fish to.

Labidochromis Hongi red top
Labidochromis Pearlmutt
Pseudotropheus Red red zebra???? whats one of them cant find it
Pseudotropheus Callainos
Pseudotropheus Elongatus
Cynotilapia Afra

am i able to put the tropheus species from tanganiyka in with mbuna or is this a big no no.

I was thinking of getting another 3 callainos to up mine to 4 then maybe 2 other species what from that list would be compatable i like the hongis but they look like my greshakei.

the "tropheus" you speak of is from MALAWI, I think your thinking of another Tropheus, a rather difficult species from Tanganyika to keep. TOTALLY unrelated to the Pseudotropheus.

All I can advise about your list is from my experience, put only males in the tank since the Pseudos can and will breed, same with the Labs and the Metriaclima. its like one big orgy to them if given a chance.

your going to LOVE the Hongi, when they color up, it's an amazing fish!! Thats all I have at the moment, i'm sure iv'e missed something.

i didnt mean psuedotropheus i meant tropheus i have bulu point lupot all these are tangs int they so ill give them a miss just got to decide on a good stocking from what i have available and what i have already.

Mark,
The Labidochromis species are prone to interbreeding, so you must make sure that you have plenty females of each species if you decide to keep them together. If you get the Hongi get rid of the Greshakei, similar colouration always leads to trouble.
If it were my tank, I'd get rid of the Greshakei, the Socolfi and the Melanochromis, and add more Callainos, and either Elongatus or the Afra.
Tropheus can be kept with mbuna but they are difficult to keep alive in mixed lake tanks and prefer to be kept species tanks, try the mbuna tank first and if you still want to keep tropheus, then either get rid of the mbuna or buy another tank to keep them in.

I was thinking maybe this what do you think?

5xLabidochromis caeruleus
1xMetriaclima Cyaneorhabdos
1xPseudotropheus socolofi albino
4xMetriaclima Callainos
4xLabidochromis Hongi red top
4xElongatus or afra what would be best?

ABERDEEN. hello budd, I have just got 6 hongi and 6 greshakei, have put them into the same tank together, and now I have just read your post regarding both, is this always the case. there only inch or 2 in size, do you think they will be ok for now??? *sorry for hijacking your thread mark* cheers :good:

I'm confused

you have or dont have Tanganyikan Tropheus bulu points? If so they should be in groups of 15 or more in large tanks of 75 + gallons.

all of the fish you listed are from lake malawi and IMHO would not be suitable tankmates for the "bulus"

maybe I need more sleep or just too much chicken dancing w/ brewyn...its all his fault!!!!

Mark was asking about keeping tropheus with his mbuna, he doesn't have them. He was also asking about pseudtropheus species, hence the confusion

I have always tried to avoid fish which have similar colouration in the same tank, you can try and see how it goes, but it may go wrong, with the dominant males fighting all the time.

cheers, ill keep an eye on them and see how it goes!

Well i have decided on this as a stocking list what do you all think?
5xLabidochromis caeruleus
1xMelanochromis Cyaneorhabdos
2xPseudotropheus socolofi albino
4xMetriaclima Callainos
4xLabidochromis Hongi red top
4xMetriaclima Estarae.

why dont you pm ferris,or freddyk ????? i have sent pms to people in the past when i havent recieved any answer.every time i have sent a pm,i have recieved a prompt and informative answer.

i have kept lots of africans before, many of which shouldnt belong together either lol.sometimes, its up to you.do you like the fish????do you think they will go together???no one on this site can definitely say that your stocking list will work.i have had a male kenyi that was so soft, every fish in the tank bullied him.in the end,i took him to my lfs.its nice for people to say"yes they will go together perfectly" but who really knows.malawis are the rule breakers.

i used to keep a tank of malawis that had a male of each fish in ie approx 15 different species.as long as none are the same colour,it should work.it did for me.i have also kept the 1 male 3 females routine as well, and that also worked.build up a good freindship with your lfs.ask the if it doesnt work, can you bring the disruptive fish bach and change them for others.as long as you dont change too much they should be fine.getting the right amount of fish in your tank is also very important.
