Has any-one ACTULY put ahalf moon in a community tank?

every-one here normaly put them into Seperate tanks...

If any-one has / or Done so before.

where they alot happyer?

Or duller?

I don't know why you're specifying half moons as any of the long tailed varieties are suceptible to 'community' attacks. And also any tail type are capable of any 'personalities'.

So know I haven't had a halfmoon in a community but I've had a veil tail.

He was miserable in a community, but at the time I didn't know what to look for so sadly he passed a few months after I'd had him. I think it was the constant stress more than anything else as the tank wasn't overstocked, and by that time was fully cycled.

it is all going to depend on the betta as an individual. the tail type doesnt matter. it will also depend on what is in the com tank. any fin nippers are going to just harrass the betta. imo its better to just keep them in their own tank rather than take a chance.

Always keep my Halfmoons, delta tails, super delta tails and ohm tails seperate, 2 expensive where I am to buy them to even attempt putting them in a community tank!

i guess thats right :good: But Even if people did would it be much of a diffrence?

i have to agree, its not it WOULDNT work, i'm just not brave enough to try it.

cant see why not, but i wouldnt want to put a £30 fish in to get nipped

funny thing is i was thinking about Your Terry / ellena's Pyscho Halfmoons and Flip's soon to be betta

Lmao SO basicly its because you three and your betta's have put this question in my head..

I Would try it. But its all depends oon the stock.

we all know some betta's HATE big amounts of room because its easy for them to get lost?? something like that.

And with all the beautiful colours you can get bettas in...I reckon they deserve the space to themselves, and I wouldn't want other fish in there 'spoiling' the bettas impressiveness! :D

No all they need to design is a 'betta' tank that is actually well thought through. Ie. is relatively shallow (12" max height) but has some decent surface area so you can get a decent shoal of corys/kuhlis/shrimp in with your betta.

Saying that, most 12" cubes are pretty perfect, they just don't seem to exist on the 'popular' market. Shame really.

Bettas don't hate large amounts of room.
They hate really tall tanks, and lots of other fish.
In the areas they came from naturally they would have extremely vast areas to live in, but these would be shallow and relatively devoid of fish. Hence instinctively this is how many of them like to live.

I reckon if you stuck a single male betta in a shallow 200l tank he'd use the entire thing and would be very happy. It's just that sadly it would be a waste of space. :(

Not if it was a heavily planted Dutch style tank as they have no fish at all or very few indeed. A single fish in a large tank isnt a waste of space at all if you make the setup really well thought out .

I kept my veil tail in a community with corydoras and a clown pleco with only one incident over a year (as of now he's only with the clown pleco) and now have my new halfmoon in a corydoras community, and so far so good. It just depends on the behavior/personality of the betta, really.

Betta's used ot live in Rich paddles so i know and realy small puddles etc. :good:

Noticed you're planning on getting a juwel 180 rio tank. If it has the internal filter box thing I would really recommend you don't put a betta in there! I've had two in mine and they've both spent most of their time stuck to the intake on the filter box, even though it isn't a strong suction. I tried all sorts to remedy the problem but it just didn't want to be cured!

The only successful betta I've kept in a community tank has been a female betta and I've now had 4 bettas. Any long tailed/finned betta's get picked at by most fish sadly.

Any males I've had in a community have been either picked on or just completely stressed all of the time. I've learn't my lesson where betta's are concerned after ignoring advice I'm now giving out myself.

As much as they are great fish, you will never see the true beauty of one in a community tank. I'm constantly shocked at youtube vids by how active and characteristic they can be in their own tank.

i have a feathertail halfmoon in a community with frogs shrimp and snails. he leaves them alone for the most part and only has staring contests with them. ive never seen a nip even once. and a VT in a community with cories ottos and snails. same scenario. the betta actually hangs out with the cories and sleeps with them.

and rice paddies have a very high diversity of fish. they are breeding grounds for all sorts of species and essential to their life cycle. just like tidal marshes in the ocean or along a river. its like a fry and fingerling HAVEN! so to say there are not many other fish in a rice paddy is not true. they live there in droves.

cheers

Hunter is happy in a community. swims round chasing fry etc lol. He always comes to the front to say hi, and is never still, i'm constantly looking for him lol

he has no torn fins, withother fish and plastic plants, which Terry does in his own cpmpartment with silk plants

go figure lol
