today is my weekly water change day, so i got all my stuff ready then thought i wanted to tweak my tank a bit, well add a background as i thought it could do with one. so i got myself a black bin liner (heard of them being used many times and measured out my tank and made it into the right size and after about 20 minutes of fiddley business trying to get it on right i actually did it.
i never thought something so simple could be so effective, very pleased with the results it definately brings out the colours of fish and the plants
and on top of all that my lambchop rasboras are now showing signs of breeding :)

my weekly water change day wasn't as easy and it all went wrong. Briefly (for anyone interested) I managed to drop my 30 litre storage box onto the concrete floor knocking a huge hole in it. This normally stands on the table next to the tank full of my temp matched, dechlorinated water with a syphon in it just waiting to be put back into the tank. So that meant a mad dash to B&Q for a replacement which cost me £7!! ouch. Got that sorted and then had the monthly fight with the filter sponges. I got those rinsed and on trying to get them back I couldn;t find my instruction booklet to get them back in in order .. had to guess. Then when I switched the filter back on it sprayed dirty water back into the freshly cleaned tank! :grr:

Then I spotted fry .. :sly: so went on the rescue mission.

3 hours later and one aching back and the job that normally takes an hour is over ... only for me to turn around a find the dog stood behind me looking hopeful and tail wagging!!

Nightmare. still, at least someone had a productive day

sounds a little crazy lol! my bucket has started to split just at the top so i had to be extra careful when using it! kinda scary haha, sometimes i get my filter sponges mixed up too, and i made sure i ran the filter in bucket of old tank water before putting it back in my tank because i have also learnt that it likes to spray lots of dirty water back into the tank, i have learnt my lesson :P haha
sounds like you had heck of a day
the worst part for me was running in the rain to the shed to fetch my fishy water bucket

my filter is glued to the tank and has a plastic insert that the sponges go into. This slides in and out of the fixed 'box' for cleaning. There's a green sponge, a blue sponge, a white course sponge, the black carbon sponge and then the fine white sponge on the top. It's the green and blue ones that I mix up - if they've gone in the wrong way round it's too bad now. I'm guessing the dirty water was in the bottom of the 'box' so when I pushed the plastic tube with the sponges inside back in and switched the filter back on it forced it back into the tank. Really annoying though.

It was a bit hectic, and it's rained all day so I got soaked when out with the dog in the morning, then up to my elbows on dirty fish tank and then got soaked again with the dog afterwards!! gotta laugh though

Wow, you guy's make it sound hard  I got my T-shirt sleeve wet diving for a misplaced rock and thought I was having a bad day!

Lol I've done that plenty of times. About to switch around a few filters wish me luck lol :fun:

I've found that 33 litre beer making buckets are awesome for aquarium water changes. They're made from food grade plastic so are perfectly safe for the fish and are nice and strong. I got two for about £20 from eBay.

haha doresy that happens to me almost every week, go in the tank come out with a wet sleeve
sounds like you had a hectic day anyway akasha :P my filter only has the 2 sponges white sponge black carbon sponge and then just the little fine sponge on top :)
ah what a fun day water change day can be :P haha !
