How is this mix?? Do i need to remove the Ram & What i think is a sheepshead acara (picture above)

Also is there space for anything else , if so any reccomendations?

Would a Blue JD be compatible?

Dwarf Cichlids do not mix with large Cichlids...ie: Severums/JDs

Thats what i thought but just wanted to check....

What about the stocking levels are they ok and can i add or should i leave at current level?

Its pretty overstocked with 2 Sevs and a Fronny im afraid...Frontosas get huge! like close to 2ft and they are predators....the dwarfs will be food very soon.

I have read up that they are actually rather peaceful fish and will reach a max of around 12" not 2 feet!!!

I am going to remove the 2 dwarfs (ram and sheepshead) this weekend. Apart from those i would have thoght the firemouths blue acara and severums would be too big to be food for the frontosa (its only 3" at the moment anyway so wont be eating any of them for a while)!!!

I may well be wrong!

Do people think any of the other cichlids i have would be ok with the frontosa?

Wills?

Fronnys are peaceful...as are Oscars...but they will still hunt and eat anything that they can fit in there mouths.

Fronnys average at around 18"+ they never max out at 12"...usually around 18-20"

Also Severums etc are soft water fish and Fronnys like a high Mbuna like PH.

So ideally what could i keep with the fronny???

Severum? blue acara? firemouth? or none of these?

They do best in species only tanks or mixed with large non agressive Haps/Victorians/ other large peaceful African cichlids...ie not Tilapia Butterkoferi/ Pollenis etc.

Frontosa with Severums is a bit of a crazy mix....dont know if it will work or not.

The Fronny will probably kill and eat the Blue Acara because one they grow rapidly and 2 the Blue Acaras are slow growing....the Firemouth will probably get eaten to.

You basically got a African Oscar on your hands with the Frontosa...they are just less bolshy, but longer than Oscars...not as muscular.

Your tank is to small long term for one to be healthy also, my tank is 100g and i wouldnt put one in it...to small.

Frontosas need to be in groups (1 male to multiple females) and a hard PH in a 6ft tank.

That sucks, i made sure i asked the guys in the fish shop as i have made mistakes before (with an oscar!!) but he told me that the fronny would be fine with them.... also that site i checked confirmed it so i thought they would be ok!

Shame as he is a beautiful fish....

What would you recomend to mix with the blue acara, severums and firemouths~?

I would say that your tank isent big enough but with overstockign and over filtration you could do...

2 Severums
Firemouth
Blue Acara
Bristlenoses
Small shoal of dithers

Just bare in mind adult sizes.

Whats the foot print of this tank? Like length and width? Cos 2 sevs 2 FMs and an acara if its a 4x2x2 sounds a bit tight to me especially when the sevs get up to full size. IMO in that tank with that mix of cichlids your at your max for cichlids, but I would agree with crazy and rehome the frontosa.

With people in the fish stores even good ones have their odd chips of bad knowledge so its best to consult multiple sources about fishes I use a few books and a few sites regularly but I always look for an other reading source that I wouldnt normally go to either through google or a magazine for info as it can shed new light on a choice. Also consult your LFS people they will help but dont take their word as gospel same with forums really a good fish for a tank is when you get green lights from a good number of sources say like if you get 7/10 sources suggesting yes go for it but if its 5/10 maybe not risk it unless you have multiple tanks that you can swap fish about in quickly in an emergency.

The tank is the c-Dream B1200 with the footprint - 122 x 44.5 x 76.

It is quite a deep tank which is why i thought it ideal for the showpiece Severums...

Also i have plenty of cavework for territories for the acara and firemouths so i guess remove the frontosa and replace with

1 blue Jack depmsey??
or

2 chocolate cichlids?

Also i currently use a fluval 405 external filter + a 90litre per hour? internal filter with powerhead....

I am thinking to remove the internal and replace with my spare fluval 305 external to get some good overfiltration

Sound ok?

EBJDs are stunning fish but can also be very fragile while young. You would need to keep up the water changes and ensure the EBJD suffers minimum stress. Try to pick out a good quality specimen from a reputable source.

Chocolate Cichlids are really like an Oscar alternative, they get big and chunky so 2 is a definite no-no. I would stay away from buying 2's of cichlids as it increases the chance of a pair or conspecific aggression, both of which you dont want if its a community tank you're trying to create.

Imo, 5 medium-large cichlids in a 4 foot tank is at the limit, in terms of territory. You have semi-docile cichlids so tank-mates such as dithers/oddballs/plecs are a possibility with good filtration.

I wouldnt risk EBJD's with Firemouths either they tend to harass new fish non stop after they establish their territory.
