6Ft Tank Check My Stocking Please

Red tailed botia are gorgeous. They do like their big groups of 4 or more, so it's good that you're getting 5.

Is your tank 24" wide ot tall?A lot of the fish that you mentioned gets huge, especially the Pangasius.

6ft long
2ft topto bottom
18inch front to back

thats the fish we currently have.
i got the pengasius from someone o needed rid of them and i knew i was getting the six foot. i know its not huge but its better than some places they could have gone.
i would like to sell some though

kellyjo we have already got the botias and have had them for 12months. hopefully going to gt another half dozen.

Hi :) those are the same dimensions as my tank so it works out at 135 gallons :) I run 2 FX5s on mine and it gives the tank a good turn over and filter capacity the main problem with this size tank is the 18 inches front to back its not great for big fish like yours.

The most important thing you have to do is get rid of the pangasious they are way way too big for the tank - also you have too many knife fish in there, even in a tank this size you really only want one of them, they send out electric signals which clash with each other and it just causes problems - I would keep one of the black ones as the clowns again get too big for this tank the others you need to rehome are the tinfoil barbs as they are very big and very active fish, the clown loach as they get to adult size and possibly the fire eels though I have to admit not sure how they would work out or not?

I'd like to think a 6 foot would be fine for clown loaches, i hope so anyway, i have 10 young ones in a 5 foot and plan to upgrade in 4 years or so after a house move to something stupidly big :D

well the common plec has a new home and a new plec will be here tomorow
golden nugget around 6 inches.

As stated pangs get huge, try to rehome them, also clown knifes, ive seen them at over 3ft in length, I know your helping giving them a bigger home, weldone, but try advertising them for rehoming to tanks or tropical ponds, maybe ask local aqauriums, just one day you may suddenly be stuck with a monster fish,

im not to sure on the golden nugget as of yet. going tomorow at 6pm.

after reading lots about the pengs it seems as thoug most of them stop growing between 8 and 12inch and it takes years for themto reach full size same with the clown knifes.
i much prfer the clown knifes and wouldrather sell the black knife fish.

if we get rid of all the large fish then what can i buy???
advised stockings
fish that will go wellwith the other fish i have etcetc

6 foot long is great for Clown Loaches but its the width that is important as well, with such active fish they need the turning space and most adults will make 10 - 12 if not more inches - there are images of some at 16 inches around so I would go for at least 2 foot wide, just to be fair to the fish.

i understand where you are coming from with the 24inch wide.
but it will take a long time for the clowns to grow that bigalong with the other fish also

With the size of the pangasious they do often kind of get stunted at somewhere between 9 inches and 30 inches they do grow massive even in captivity, they just get a snubbed nose from bashing into the glass as they are a migratory fish that swarm in huge rivers across Asia and really should not be kept in tanks but it happens they are in the trade in mass numbers but so few places that can look after them properly. If you can find somewhere that can take them I would get rid of them because they are just a nightmare you do not need.

The Knives again are big and they do grow to the big sizes, it does take time but they will get there and at the end of the day you get a fish to house it for life and with big fish like these your looking at 10 years +

The problem with the fish you have you have very few that you can hold for life in a tank like this as simply put these fish need ponds.

Also the Black/African Knives - you should not rehome just 2 as they can be kept as a group though in a tank it is not healthy how ever as a pair one will become dominant and harrass and even kill the weaker one.

Of the fish you have from the original list I would keep

1 Black Knife Fish (are these African Brown Knives or Black Ghost Knivefish?)
1 Fire Eel
4 Clown Loaches (though as I said you need to consider when is right to rehome them but to be honest given how many are available this size tank is a good home for them right now)
5 Red Tailed Botia (though I have heard these can be aggressive when adult and can cause issues to each other and other species, I would be worried about your Clown Loaches)

Then its upto you as what to keep in there, we have the same size tank and my rule is generally not to have anything that grows over 10 inches - though things like plecs and less active fish I would be more flexable. This is my thread with some pics of the tank and the fish - dont know if it will give you some ideas

If I am being honest the fish you have are all less than ideal as a lot of them are large growing which the the tank though large just can not cope with. There are so many options with a tank this size and few of the fish you have now are the right ones.
