680Lt Fish Tank - What Would You Stock?

I might be upgrading to a 680lt fish tank soon which is pretty exciting and so I'm wanting to know which fish stocking will be suitable? If I change it to freshwater then what will be a good mix? Then I can figure out the type of decorations I want in the tank, so it's suitable for the fishes natural environment. Could I possibly keep oddballs like stingrays and eels together and if I did go for these, then what other fish would go well with them e.g. maybe a group of pictus catfish? However I wouldn't want to stock any fish like oscars but would go for bigger eels like the fire eel or lots of small spiny eels. I would like to keep them as juvenilles so I can see them grow day by day.
Are there any oddballs that stay in shoals like tetras?
Any other ideas will really be appreciated, however I have got full marine on my mind but not too sure yet as still need to do a lot of research on keeping marine but I think I know all the basics.


If you had a 680lt tank from scratch fully matured then what would you do to it e.g. type of water like salt, fresh or brackish water, stocking fish and how would you go about stocking meaning which fish you would put in first.

Even at this stage I can go in any direction, so all comments very much appreciated.

Well i have a 566 litre so that would be grand to move my stock to depending on tank dimentions..

My stockings

1 channa pleuro

1 ornate birchir

4 bala sharks

2 pink tailed charachin

1 spotted silver dollar<should be in a group but he was a rescue<try to find more fullgrown dollars,impossible>

1 pair of tiger oscars



It really depends there's so many options out there, not sure mind the tanks big enough for ray's....this is why i never went down that road, but there are soooo many odd fish out there....again depends if you like aggressive fish or would like a nice peaceful community, my community is very peaceful,took along time to get there,when i do i have to sell

Ive told you my stocking basically because iam very happy with the combo and to me it looks great

Fire Eels?
Arrowanas? don't know if they grow too big.
Bigger Pleco's like the Gibbi's?
A Turtle of some sort?
Discus setup?
Malawi set up?
Tanganyikan set up?

300 Neon Tetra's?

How about a school of baby Spotted Climping Perch, Ctenopoma acutirostre? I believe that would all need to be added at the same time as youngsters to get along. It would be great to see someone have space for a group and see their pack hunting and with a bit of luck, possibly some babies if its a mixed group (presumeably better to be more females than males, even just for less aggressiveness sake)!

If it was me i'd go for a vast school of cardinals and some Discus (Not sure if they will eat the cardinals) planted with lots of Amazon swords and a whole load of wood.

ok for a 680L oddball setup, I'd go with a Microlepsis Dat, a good sized tyre track Eel, some nice polys, Ornate, delhezi and endlicheri maybe? a shoal of Hujeta Gars for the surface (or you could go for Pink tailed chalceus which nelly has) and a lima shovelnose to finish

I have a 637L tank, and have the following stock:

1 x Red Tiger Oscar
1 x Green Terror
1 x Red Spot Severum
1 x Green Severum
1 x Convict
1 x Polypterus Delhezi

I'd recommend getting some Polys if you like oddballs, also depending on dimensions maybe a shovel nose of some sort.

I'd go with a load of geophagus...

Or better still, go planted (simple maintainance plants) and go for vast schools of tetras, corydoras etc. or harlequins...

Better still, have a decent filtration flow and go for some big schools af rainbow fish?

Hi thanks everyone I was looking forward to see everyone's ideas, sorry I had no access to internet as broadband usage ran out.
I have always loved frontosas but never kept them which i was told they weren't suitable for my 40g but hopefully now I will beable to stock them. Would type of setup would frontosas need and where do they come from?
I already have a malawi & tangyikan setup so would like to try out something different.

Spotted Climping Perch, hmm they are nice but never seen them on for sale before at lfs axcept aquarist ad. Would prefer a mix of different species but will have a think about it. 300 neon tetras will look good in my kitchen lol Eels is another suggestion I'm thinking of but still deciding to get fire eel or tanganyikan eel or lots of smaller spiny eels.

I have searched Microlepsis Dat in google images but still not sure what it is as it comes up with different fish. geophagus these look nice but never seen them around.

I wanted a big puffer like the mbu but could I keep them with eels other fish, they are supposed to be peaceful arn't they? Whats their minimum tank size needed because they seem to vary on different websites? I would love to mix in frontosa with them would that be a good idea because they also do get very big. My lfs is also selling the red version frontosas could have 2 different mixes would look good, I wonder if they different personalities.
