That's what I was thinking too. With the New World cichlids, in a 55g, your options are going to be pretty limited - they get BIG and are quite territorial. With the Malawis, they stay smaller and while they are territorial, the solution is what would normally be considered "overcrowding" to help distribute the aggression.
