55 Gallon - What Fish Should I Get?

To add to the list of plants, here are some plants that I have, they do well in my low-moderate light tank:
  • Water sprite (ceratopteris thalictrodes)
  • Water wisteria (Hygrophila difformis)
  • Purple Cabomba (cabomba plcherrima)
Those three grow really fast so it takes some maintenance to keep them trimmed down.  Mine grow really quickly, I have had to trim about every two weeks.
  • Cryptocoryne parva
  • Microsword grass (It is supposed to have high light but is doing well w/my low-mod, suprisingly)
  • Subwassertang / Pellia or Mini-Pellia (my shrimp love it)
  • I have two different kinds of anubias as well, one tied to a piece of wood, one to be tied down.

Familiar with Maysville, and my in-lawslive in Commerce. Was wondering, to see if we could find something other than Petco and Petsmart for you. Got a Petland, Pet Supplies Plus, and an independent fish only shop in Athens. They are building a Petsmart, now the closest is in Bethlehem. The Closest Petco is down at the Mall of Georgia, which disgusted me last time I was there.
If all bettas are pretty, with a 55 you could set up a nice sorority.
Some other easy plants are Anacharis/elodea, hornwort, camboma, watersprite, and crypts. Though crypts and swords tend to melt before coming back.
As to pH, it is only a real concern for a few specific fish species. Just make sure you acclimate your fish before putting them in your tank.

Thank you, my hand is just about completely healed. The index finger doesn't bend fully nor straighten fully, and slight nerve damage in the second, meaning I lost some feeling in the finger tip. But they are still attached.
Oh neat! Yeah I've been to petland before, actually applied there for work. It was a bit small but was really great :D And I did see some halfmoons there. >.< Oops, sorry. Female bettas are fairly pretty but I prefer the males. Heh ^^' Acclimating the fish..I'd let them float in their plastic baggy in the water for a bit before putting them in right? :)
Glad to hear it's getting better. Better to have lost some feeling in it than the whole thing!

Thank you! I will keep them in mind :) Two weeks doesn't seem too bad.

Yeah, it was real quick. Took some scissors and did a quick trim and replant. Took like 3 minutes total, most of that was because I was moving slow to keep from scaring the fish and from making a big wet mess on the floor! Oh and I had too many peanuts telling me where the cuttings should be replanted!

As to acclimating, yes float them for about a half hour to equalize temp. to tank temp. Then open the bag and place it or just fish and water into a seperate container. Use a bit of airline hose to siphon water from your tank into the container. Knot the airline or use a valve to create a steady drip. Let the volume of water double empty about half, down the drain and do it again. Takes about an hour and slowly acclimates your new fish to your tanks parameters. When down place fish only in the tank. Don't put water from the shop into your tank, cuts down on chances of putting anything bad into your tank.

Alright, thankyou for the explanation! I will try my best :) Heh, was gonna ask you about that not putting the shop water part 'cause that's what I was thinking aswell.

I hope it's alright for me to continue posting in here. I have a better idea of what type of fish I want now but still have some questions and would like more opinions.  I also have some pictures, we have the tank up but havn't started the cycling process I don't think? It's still clearing up from putting in the gravel (we sort of..forgot to rinse it. LOL) I am having a ton of trouble figuring out how to do pictures on here..sorry if they're too big or small >_< I have no idea what I'm doing. That is of the tank right now..and here are some close ups of the filter thingydos..I'm not 100% sure what we have, going by what I've been able to google they look like AquaTech 30-60s.They seem to be different going by the coverings.. And here is an attempted picture at the..substrate? [CaribSea FloraMax Planted Aquarium Substrate - Black] Here is the link to it. I know you guys said that corys need sand and I don't think this counts..but from what I've found they may do okay on this? Loaches too hopefully? http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11147295&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo Also was wondering if loaches and corys are okay in the same tank? I was thinking maybe just one golden gourami as my little stand out guy and then some other fish that I can have a lot of. I was wanting swordtails but I don't think I can have many of them in there if I'm keeping the corys and loaches happy (I was hoping for 6 corys and 6 loaches, or more depending on what other fish and amount of those fish I get). If I were to still get swordtails I would want them to all be male cause, well, I like their sword tail. If I kept them in a big enough group and had no females around to fight for would they still fight? Since I'm thinking those probably won't work maybe like someone said, some female bettas? How many of those could I have with all the other stuff (not the swordtails, these are what I'd get instead)? I've tried using FishForums.net but I'm still not 100% on how to read it. If I'm reading it correctly and I'm correct on the type of filters I have then it didn't get angry with me until I got up to 10 albino corys, 10 kuhli loaches, 1 golden gourami, and 29 female bettas. This sounds really awesome but I'm fairly certain I must be reading it wrong

Some ideas on other fish that look nice in big groups would be nice and any responses to this are greatly appreciate. Thank you so much for all your help

It replaced the advisor site with fishforums.net >_<

Hey Nin!  Congrats on the new tank, things are looking great.  I don't know anything about loaches but I don't see why you can't keep that many corys in a 55 gallon tank, provided you are getting adequate filtration.  Excellent choice, by the way.  I think you will love the Corys.  I am sure the loaches and corys will be compatible, but numbers on the loaches I'm not real sure about.  If you're going to have a planted tank with some open areas for another school of fish, perhpas some harlequin rasboras?  I hope I am not steering you wrong here, I am sure I will be corrected rather quickly if I am.  Best of luck.

Creepin' my threads.. :p I suppose it's only fair considering how often I go to check and see if you've updated yours!
This is really old though and I made a new topic regarding my stocking. I already have 5 rummynose tetras and 8 albino cories. Will be upping the tetras and adding a golden gourami and 8 kuhli loaches, I think. ^_^
