I don't know, but in basically every tank the discus enthuseist had (except breeding tanks) he had some kind of small tetra.

i have seen many pics of discus tanks wit hneions in it. i didn't mean neons and discus in particular, i meant like guppies and bigger fis hand such lol.

i know in nature angelfish naturally eat neons as a staple food source, but in home aquaria (in most situations i've observed) the angels leave them be. why this is i don't know.

i say go for it, but leave a small school at first jsut ot make sure as you wouldn't want a buffet for your discus where the fish cost $2 a pop (at least by me they cost that much).

i say give it a try and let us know how it goes down.

good luck and i hoep everythign works out for you :good:

Common plecs can suck on the sides of Discus, not a pretty sight! I've kept Bristlenose, Clown and King Tigers with them.

I would be careful about what type of corys are suitable for discus temps, there are not many and if you add cooler water corys, they will die prematurley, best would be sterbai, adolphis, aggazissi, aeneus and a couple others

I would just be careful with any plec as everybody knows, they make alot of waste, so unless you want to vac your tank everyday to keep is extra clean, then I would get rid of any ideas of a plec.

(Discus need very clean water and don't like water chemistry swings)

yes they are very difficult to keep. keeping the propher ph and hardness with water changes atleast twice aweek with a good filtration is a good way to go. make sure your ph and hardness are stable and use bottled water if your city water does not meet the recommendations for keeping discus.

Usually cardinals are kept with discus rather than neons because cardinals can handle the higher temps required for discus. Either way, accept the fact that they could potentially become discus food. 55 gals isn't really that big for a school of discus in the first place so I'm not sure it's wise to add all the fish you are suggesting. It doesn't leave much room for your discus. I wouldn't add a plec in a setup like that, they are poop machines and in the limited space you have it's asking for trouble. How many discus are you thinking about getting and are you thinking about getting adults or juveniles?

actually if you put the discus with neon tetras since they are small, while growing they'll get used with each other and they'll do just fine... some friends of mine have aquariums like that...

though i wouldn't add more species there (i don't like mixtures)
If proper water changes are done, the discus will get very large and almost allways eat the neons...Many people have "dwarf" discus due to water conditions.

agreed, corrys dont like high temps as discus do. I cant believe how many keep discus with corrys, the corrys live about 10 months....

why not go for some rummy nose tetras. They are known to do really well in with Discus and will also let you know how your water is doing to an extent for your discus. If the water is good they will show brillant rose coloured heads. If the water is not good, they will show a greyish pinkhead.

blue rams will also co-exist as well as some dwarf chiclids, but NOT all chiclids.

hope that helps mate.

Adolfoi and Sterbai do perfectly well in the sort of temps that discus require and thrive in the conditions. it has also been known for Sterbai to spawn unaided in a discus tank.

Yes, I should have specified I meant the majority of corries.

Again, I read a book in which a discus specialist kept neon ot cardinal tetras in almost all of his tanks. I think he would have at least mentioned it if they were eaten.

i would NOT advise you to keep a plec with your discuses. discuses whent they spawn, lose their colourings and exude something called discus milk on which the fry feed. having a plec attached to the side of your fish can be a very disturbing sight! especially on a fish as beautiful and effort intensice to keep as a discus.

I would say the plec argument is by the by anyway, as a 55g isn't big enough for a common plec.

As for rams with discus, I thought one of the reasons for not keeping angels with discus was because they're shy and angels would bully them, and also that they are more frenzied feeders? My rams are miles more aggressive and busy than the angels - I don't see how one could work and the other couldn't. Doesn't make sense at all. :/
