Well, I've been so thrilled with owning Buster (my big male flowerhorn) in my 300 litre that I decided that what I really want in each of my tanks is a single big wet pet.

So despite my huge admiration of my (admittedly rather dim) GT in my 500 litre (plus all the other smaller (grow on) cichlids) in there, I cleared out the entire tank to some really great guys who had large tanks they wanted to stock up. THe GT went on his own to one guy and the others were all taken by another chap, all with great new homes.

So I was looking for something (ideally) from the Amphilophus genus to put in there ... so a midas or a red devil really.

Anwyway, phoning around yesterday, I found a large male red devil at the Newbury MA (not too far from me). I went over to see him this afternoon, He was clearly not happy in the tank he was in .. with a load of 4-5 inch other red devils. On talking to the staff it was pretty obvious that he had been happy in a tank on his own, but as soon as they added the other RD's he was very stressed out.
So, I felt sorry for him and, in a way, it was a bit of a rescue.

Got him home this afternoon and after an hour or so he is really settling in. What an INTELLIGENT fish. My goodness, it feels almost like I am interacting with a whale in there. his eyes follow me around in such a knowing way. Even after just having him in there for 10 minutes he came up the front to see me, but just in a really "knowing" way. I can't really explain it in better words, but I just know that I am interacting with a pretty intelligent being.
I think he is going to be really happy here.
Here's a couple of pics ...

He's a bit of a bruiser. About 11" long at the moment..... Oh, I've called him "Beef" for the moment. Names are always subject to change in the early days though.

Apparently he ate 17 complete mussels yesterday at the shop so he would seem to have a good appetite.

He's been doing a bit of digging already in the last couple of hours. To be honest, I expect to get up tomorrow to find a re-arranged tank.

Gonna like this fish !

Gorgous fish!!

I know exactly what you mean in this statement, its the same connection I got with Chops, its spooky

What a bruiser indeed, would love to see a vid or 2 of him

A friend of mine (not on this forum) has a Midas of about 12" in his own tank too. He called it Poppy when it was young as he though it was a female, turned into a "monster" with a hump like yours

Apparently Poppy is as gentle as anything with his wife when she's fiddling in the tank etc but as soon as he sticks his hand in it goes for him...he has to get his better half distracting him if anything major needs to be done to the tank... (Poppy is a ladies man it seems)

I can see the attraction of one big fish like this...one day maybe...

stunning!! great find .

oh and star.... chops? inteligent? are we sure about that

Oh wow. As much as i love this new addition to the forum i'm also gutted the GT is gone. I definately favour the idea of seeing a short video of this bruiser, that would be ace.

The idea of a wet pet is certainly catching on in this forum lately.

Keep the updates coming :)

Ok so Chops isnt smart just demanding

The name Jupiter comes to mind for some weird reason, why ask someone who called their fish Chops to name fish

I'm a bit gutted the GT has gone, he was a nice specimen. However beefy looks pretty good, as said a vid is needed for our fix!

I'd call him Vesper :)

Lesley, Maybe you named Chops because ultimately thats all he's good for? The Chop  Naaahhh i wouldnt, and i don't mean it :p He's lovely.

Hehe

Call him banger as thats what he will be doing trying to get to you! Glass banging with that big bump! If you loose a digit it not the fishes fault! LOL :shout:

beefy, isnt that ian bothams nick name

You are correct, although I'm not sure that cricket is this fish's game. Maybe rugby or ....... cage-fighting ?

"Beef" certainly seems to fit him for the moment, although I am always changing fish names after a couple of days so watch this space .... suggestions always welcome !

A Vid will unfortunately be out of the question for the moment, as I have no way of doing one, as my videocam died earlier this year, and my recent outrageous spending on a new 500 litre tank meant that I couldn't afford a new one !! :p

BTW, to whoever posted comment no 2 in the thread, my browser doesn't seem to want to let me see it so sorry if it was a question.

Comment #2 was a comment from Lesley, see if this allows you to see it. If not tough love aye

Yes, Lesley, I know what you are talking about !

call him brock after lesnar seeing as he is a cage fighter lol

Nice looking fish! It might be the camera settings or earl settling in days, but I reckon he looks more orange than red, which beckons some sort of Dutch name for him ;)
