Fish Herder
Well, I've been so thrilled with owning Buster (my big male flowerhorn) in my 300 litre that I decided that what I really want in each of my tanks is a single big wet pet.
So despite my huge admiration of my (admittedly rather dim) GT in my 500 litre (plus all the other smaller (grow on) cichlids) in there, I cleared out the entire tank to some really great guys who had large tanks they wanted to stock up. THe GT went on his own to one guy and the others were all taken by another chap, all with great new homes.
So I was looking for something (ideally) from the Amphilophus genus to put in there ... so a midas or a red devil really.
Anwyway, phoning around yesterday, I found a large male red devil at the Newbury MA (not too far from me). I went over to see him this afternoon, He was clearly not happy in the tank he was in .. with a load of 4-5 inch other red devils. On talking to the staff it was pretty obvious that he had been happy in a tank on his own, but as soon as they added the other RD's he was very stressed out.
So, I felt sorry for him and, in a way, it was a bit of a rescue.
Got him home this afternoon and after an hour or so he is really settling in. What an INTELLIGENT fish. My goodness, it feels almost like I am interacting with a whale in there. his eyes follow me around in such a knowing way. Even after just having him in there for 10 minutes he came up the front to see me, but just in a really "knowing" way. I can't really explain it in better words, but I just know that I am interacting with a pretty intelligent being.
I think he is going to be really happy here.
Here's a couple of pics ...
He's a bit of a bruiser. About 11" long at the moment..... Oh, I've called him "Beef" for the moment. Names are always subject to change in the early days though.
Apparently he ate 17 complete mussels yesterday at the shop so he would seem to have a good appetite.
He's been doing a bit of digging already in the last couple of hours. To be honest, I expect to get up tomorrow to find a re-arranged tank.
Gonna like this fish !
