A five gallon tank has a lot of possibilities for a peaceful community if it's filtered, and you keep up with doing regular water changes. With a tank that small, it's not much trouble to do, so it's ok to think about exceeding the "inch per gallon" guideline.

If you have a sand bottom, a few kuhli loaches are interesting, and if it's planted, otos would work too. C. habrosus, C. hastatus and C. pygmaeus are tiny corys that would do well for you. A single male guppy would give you some color.
