It certainly helps and is possibly better than a fishless cycle but mature tanks are different to newly cloned tanks - in my opinion. I've cloned before, but it's still never the same as a stable mature tank. Tanks I've found only really find a stable balance after 6 months or so - until then a slightly larger than usual water changes or more thorough vigorous filter clean can upset the balance and throw a little mini spike - and nitrite and ammonia in even the smallest quantities are not generally tolerated by shrimp.

But sounds like the survivors will be doing just fine :)

I'm sticking to small water changes say 10% maybe less every week. Touch wood but its all going great sofar. My first tank I did not cycle properly and cocked up quite badly, I lost qiute a few fish and got quite disheartened. I know I'm still learning but the most valuable things to learn are patience and that you can never ask to many questions.
