Cleaning out my 30 gallons for a new start, I put about 15 Amano shrimp and several green Neocaridina into a plastic "critter keeper," which I had filled with tank water after rinsing said critter keeper thoroughly with very hot water.

Well, there must have been some sort of residue, because when I looked the next evening, every single one of the shrimp was dead. The snails seem fine. No idea what happened.

Not really seeking advice here--it's much too late for that--but wondering what might have happened. The container was sitting in my garage for a long time, and I do lots of projects in there. Hard telling what kind of residue might have gotten into it...but I keep my water change buckets and siphons in there too, and I've never had a mass die-off like that in one of my tanks. So I think it was something in the container itself. No idea what.

OK. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. Carry on.

It’s some residue from one of your projects . I’d bet anything on it . Something aerosol . Plastic , even the supposedly best kinds , absorbs fumes .
I know this to be a fact because my Number One Daughter is big on room fresheners . She has those plug in ones in every room in her house . I go over and raid her leftovers and I can smell and taste that room freshener on the plastic containers .
You must fart in the general direction of plastic and switch over to glass .

Generally I'm with you on that. We're trying to move toward glass and stainless steel for most uses. For field collecting containers? Plastic is actually better than glass. (and I try not to fart in the direction of things that absorb fumes  )
