ok so I know there are a lot of contrasting opinions on tank size for lovely little bettas but my mum had a small cube tank given to her (she breeds hamsters so someone thought it might be useful for that I guess) I'm not sure on exact size but today in the range there was a similar size tank in there so now im thinkin of using it, I would use a plastic tub behind it for a diy filter and to increase the water volume a bit, similar to this >> biteraspects HOB << but bigger, probably the 3.8L tub I found today? what do people think?
cheers people :good:

i may be housing one in a 25 Litre ( approx 3 gallons? ) Small i know But it'll do for the time being As i buy him a bigger house later on in the year.

another 25 Litre for Shrimpys :)

5.5 gallons is'nt even a gallon is it?

I DOnt know.

i did'nt see a picture either..

Umm matt? show me one :p?

lol its just a glass cube, i did try to find a picture of the one in the shop but ther wasn't one lol will post up a pic when i get it off my mum, 1us gallon is 3.5L roughly

this was the tank I saw in the shop, dont worry im not stupid enough to stock it like this guy lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=godhMiI8Nng

should be safe for one betta i guess.

And i like he's Oranda's

tank looks clean but FAR too small

I personally wouldn't put a betta in anything below 5gal (20 litres) Though will accept that 3gal is a safe minimum if you're talking about a trade off on space vs volume. Anything below this, although has been proven to be do-able (and fish have lived full lives in containers down to 1gal), I just think is cruel as they aren't provided with the space and stimulation that I think they deserve.

So anyhoo, the 5.5l is only just 1.5 US Gal...way way too small in my opinion.
With the additional filtration volume it should probably work as a stable system. But I just can't see how it's dimensions could physically be large enough to give the fish a 'fair' and happy life.

thanks for the comments, im not so sure about using it now then (will probably put him in my 10gal with some panda corys :good: any sujestions on what i could use the 5.5 for if anything? maybe shrimp? could shrimp go in with a betta or would they get eaten? lol thanks much!

Shrimp with bettas tends to depend on the betta. Larger shrimp like amanos should be fine, but cherries are hit and miss, he may or may not try to eat them. Give them plenty of cover though and it's certainly worth giving it a go.

But yes, in 5.5 litres you could definitely try shrimp :) Give them plenty of plants and such and they should be fine.

thanks mr101 I know they are fussy about water quality but hopefully they will be okay if I make a big enough filter just the heating would be a problem, have to see if I can find a small enough heater, maybe put it in the filter bit to keep the display relativly clutter free :good: I think I might be getting MTS as well as BTS

Mini im soooo lucky i get like.

3 fish tanks :D! in one day ( i think its 3 anyway? )
