Hey guys, I would like to get some suggestions on which hardware to purchase for a 40 gallon reef tank, (filter, proteinskimmer, ect...) All suggestions are more than welcome, and also if any of you know some good places to shop for these items in the Los Angeles, CA area or the internet. Thanks.

I recently posted a reply to another poster asking a similar question, I will find the post and will post it on here

45g Tank

I am sure most of these products are avaiable in the US

Thanks for the link. Do you have any brands you prefer?

IMO I would say anything by Deltec or Aquamedic gets my cash (Cant beat the Germans)

I have an Aquamedic Skimmer & lighting , Deltec Pumps and I think they are the best

I would also try ebay as there is loads of equipment there and you could save a packet

Are you going for a FOWLR or Reef System

Hi:
1) Ebo Jager heater hands down
2) If HOB, AquaC Remora or CPR BakPak skimmer
3) Maxijet powerheads
4) Aquarium Pharm test kit; if you have the bucks, Salifert
5) Tropic Marin salt or Marine Bioassay
6) Refractometer over hydrometer
7) Coral Life digital thermometer

Just a few. SH

Thanks for all the info guys! Is it good to use two powerheads and of how much for a 40 gallon tank. Also if you guys know any good brand for air pumps I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks.

Hi there

For a 40g tank (US not UK) so 150 ltr's, I would turn this tank over between 20 - 25 x per hour (IMO) I preffer a higher flow myself but this is a good flow for a reef system.

So at 25 x you should be looking for powerheads/streams to produce about 3750 litres per hour (If using powerheads I would do this over 2 or 3 P/H's)

If you dont want to use Powerheads, why not either try Tunze Streams or Ocean runner pumps situated outside the tank.

I will leave the pump types for someone else (SH) as being in teh UK I am unsure of what types are available in the US
