Hi

Just got rid of my BiOrb :D :D :D best thing I've done and bought myself a Juwel 60, which is alot better, but seems a little big for my 3 platies.

For a beginner could someone give me some advice as to what other pretty fish I could put in.

Something easy to keep, pretty and colourful, bettas??

I can't wait to get the tank stocked up (not all at once!) I am concerned about getting anymore livebearers as I've already gone through one pregnancy (none survived :( ) but just don't want to stock my tank and then for it to get overstocked if any fry survive.

Can I have an all female tank?? Or will the hormones take over

neon tetras small but colorful
lemon and bleeding heart tetras
Rams , nice colors(need a gd 29 gallon for a pair)
Panda cories , small and so cute
2 male fancy guppies
torpedo barbs..oh they are hot! but I dont if they will nip on ur current livebearers
pearl gouramis, if u have a gd size tank, these fish are very pretty

I dunno, i go to a petstore and see the fish and their colors and then choose from there

The great thing about platies is they get along with everyone! :D Guppies are very popular and get along well with platies. They come in 100s of colors and patterns. A gourami would look nice, too. Good luck~!

Oh, and about the all-female thing... that is fine. Usually, the hormones take over when they're all males. I used to have all male guppies and they were quite gay.

try not to get bettas, they will fight each other (males and females), and also attack any other brightly coloured fish. Only have bettas on their own in a small tank (maybe a minimum of 2 gallon?)

Try about 6 neon tetras and a couple of honey gouramis, bright and colourful fish.

:good:

How big is a Juwel 60? I second adding corries for the bottom and a gourami for the top.

Neons are obviously a great stallwart and well worth keeping but my personal fav is the Bolivian Ram or Bolivian Butterfly. Very peaceful, beautiful and hardy.

Female livebearers are usually not very troubled by hormones- tbh they will probably be all the happier without any males to bother them. I keep female platies and female guppies together, and they seem a very pleasant group. You can get very nice-looking female guppies these days.

But otherwise, what I would recommend would be corys. 3 or 4 at least, as they like being in groups.

I would pass on the betta as that might easily mistake the platies for other male bettas and try to kill them (not the brightest of creatures, bettas). But a honey gourami would be fine.

The Juwel 60 is 60 ltrs (not counting displacement)= 15 US gallons.

I love the look of the Bolivian Butterfly fish gorgeous  ,

I take it, if I am going for an all female tank it won't matter the mixture of different female fish??

The suggestions are great, thanks everyone for your advice, keep em comin

xx

Cardinal Tetras are very nice also, and only slightly larger than neons. They get on fine with Platys (I have both in my community tank.) Keeping your livebearers to all female is fine for platys, many people prefer to keep all males for guppies since they have nicer finnage. Platys are the same no matter which sex :)

Bettas don't really mix in general community tanks, they can be aggressive especially towards similar sized brightly coloured fish, or neons for that matter. If you do decide to try one make sure you have a spare tank sitting ready for him to be rehomed if/when he goes homicidal.

Corydoras are great little shoaling bottom feeders, a lot of fun to watch and very active. A small shoal of one of the smaller species would be great.

You can get very fancy females these days. My three, with large blue/silvery tails and yellow/spottedblack, are easily the prettiest fish in my tanks.
