i have a 3 gallon tank that is soon to start cycling and i was wondering if i could put 2 female guppies and 2 female mollies. ive kept mollies in small tanks (2 gallons) before when i was inexperienced and the molly lived for 5 years. same with guppies. i will also have a few live plants like java fern and anubias. i intend to do frequent water changes to keep the aquarium healthy. will the stocking list be ok??

Yes i shouldnt imagine that stocking to be any problems. As you said regular weekly water changes and a good fully matured filter and you shouldnt have an problems with this stocking. The only way i've worked that out is 3us gallons is roughly 11 litres, and that in turn is about 19pints, which is adequate enough for this stocking.

I know, pints aye. Its the easiest way i can comprehend a 3 gallon tank :p Hah!

I certainly wouldnt keep mollies in that sized tank, personally I dont think mollies should be in any tank smaller than 15 gal, I had a molly couple of years back that reached over 4" which is a large fish for a tiny 3gal tank

Wasnt one of my more helpfull posts having looked back at it =/ Perhaps i should refrain from posting when fresh out of bed :p Mollies might be a tad big, i think i was thinking of platys, and even the females of them get rather big i suppose. 11L seemed bigger first thing in the morning, maybe it was my thirst :p

I wouldnt keep mollys in a 3G they get about 4" and are very active and nippy IME which the guppies wouldnt do to well with.

Oh dear, its time for me to suggest a colony of yeast or daphnia again!

Tanks of this size should not be sold in fish shop as fish tanks in my opinion, they are simply too small. Not to mention, the water could and probably would go from fine to deadly in the blink of an eye!

I wouldnt put platys in there either they can get 3". It would look good as a planted shrimp and snail tank.

I wouldn't have agreed about Platys before I had them but one of mine is getting on for 3 inches now! Or so he looks to me lol.

what about Endlers? Surely she can have a couple of them?

Shrimp :) and a nerite snail for a bit of colour. Or cherry shrimp for colour :)

if you can manage to keep the water stable in such a small tank and had to have fish in it then i think the only kind of fish that could live in there are things like micro rasboras. these stay very small and dont have a massive bioload. the thing is i find then quite dull....... so not my cup of tea im affraid.
plant it up and add a few species of shrimp and a snail :good:
